What is the right black for a 69 SS dash? Is it a semigloss or gloss? My dash is in great shape, but I would like to make it look like new. The dash is completely disassembled so, I was planing to scotch-brite , degrease, and paint using an aerosol can.

I've rattle canned a dash or two with black laquer in a can. It's not real shiny. I'd guess it to be ~ 70% gloss. Not sure though. If want total 100% concours correctness, please disregard this post. If you do go this route, clean as you mentioned, plus, clean with lacquer thinner before painting. The quality of the finish will almost entirely be dependant on how well the piece is cleaned and prepped. If you do a search on dash chrome or dashes, you might find a good link to a chrome-like modelers paint for the 'chrome' edging to finish it off.

Mike,

Are you referring to painting the plastic around the instruments & controls, or the metal frame part of the dashboard? I think Jimmy assumed you were talking about the plastic, but I'm not sure which part you want to paint. In either case, Jimmy has a good suggestion about doing a search, because this topic has been covered before. You might try searching in the interiors section, too.

I’m talking about painting the metal part of the dash. The black has faded and I’m not sure what degree of gloss would be factory correct. A search does sound like the way to go.

Thanks for the input.

Did a quick search and it looks like a semi-gloss black is the answer. But now I have a new question. Do I clear coat or not? Is wax enough--- or do I paint and leave it alone?

Semi gloss below the pad. Paint it without clearcoat. Between the pad and windshield it should be flat black.
