Please help me ID an engine I want to rebuild for my 68 Malibu. It is
casting number 10066036, the stamped # is 1M09016VP. It has a 4" bore, 4bolt main w/ two piece seal. Interesting thing about the casting #, the last two numbers are different that the rest, it appears that they were changed or something, maybe with a welder??? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Karl

Over the years I've heard conflicting reports about the Mexican built engines. Some say they are an excellent platform for building a nice engine, some say they are poor castings. Personally, If the block seens to be in good condition and you don't see any obvious indications of core shift, I'd use it to build a healthy 355 or 383.

And by the way, speaking of 383s, when you install a 3.75 crank (400 stroke) in a 350 block, the bottom end of the cylinders have to be notched for clearance of the rods. The SB400 blocks come cast with these notches already there. But, you (or your machinist) has to do this to a 350 block to make a 383. It is a very simple procedure to do at home with a die grinder and a good rotary file (spend a little extra on a carbide rotary file). Be careful removing material, or you may end up in the water passage. If you do each cylinder using the the rod for that cylinder and cut just enough for the rod to clear, you will be fine.
Here is a picture of the notch that is cast in 400 blocks. The big notch is the factory notch. The smaller notch is the one I made because a little added clearance was needed for an additional .100 stroke on this crank.
