: 1966 425hp 396
5rees Jan 2nd, 07, 9:39 PM  Hi to all, I am in need of info. I found a 1966 ss396 today that an ederly gentleman said he purchased new with his fathers help that owned a chevy dealership. He said they special ordered the car with a 425 horse 396 which i have been told they only put out 7 or 8 cars with this engine. He also said he has all the paperwork to prove his claim. The car is red on red with a 4 speed bench seat with red wheels and the small partial hubcaps, He also said they had wire wheel covers also. I need to learn what I can about this car if anyone can help.

the 425 hp 396 was a Vette motor only and 1965 only..biggest HP in a 1966 chevelle was the 375HP 396, not to say it was not dealer installed. If he has paper to back it up I would like to see it. If it is a 375 hp car it is a rere beast in its own right!!!

oldtimebaseballfan Jan 2nd, 07, 11:05 PM Hello and welcome. I agree with Al.
If you can get copies of the documentation, post it on here and we will see if it is legit. Maybe you could get the casting #s from the block and heads and dates.
droptop396 Jan 2nd, 07, 11:05 PM the 425 hp 396 was a Vette motor only and 1965 only..
Not true.
The 425 horse 396 was available in the Full size 1965 Chevrolet as well.
but definately not in a 1966 chevelle.
Keith Tedford Jan 2nd, 07, 11:19 PM The '65 425 hp 396 and the '66 L78 375 hp are one and the same. The factory got a little carried away with the 425 hp rating.
joe58 Jan 3rd, 07, 12:00 PM It would be interesting to see the paperwork if you can post copies of what they have.
As said above, the 1966 Corvette and Pass used the 396/425hp L78 rating and Chevelle used the 396/375hp L78 rating but some of the high performance dealers used creative advertizing and ran ads for 396/425hp L78 Chevelles since it was the same engine. 1966 magazines articles also made notice of the 396/425hp L78 as same engine in the Chevelle and refered to it as a "425hp" car.
When the 1967 L72 engines were released they were first labled as 450hp then lowered to 425hp. As time went by, the Corvette, Pass, and 427 COPO L72 cars became known as the "425hp" cars and the Chevelle Nova Camaro 396/375hp L78s became known as "375hp" cars. Today most people think of the 1966 L78 Chevelle as a "375hp" car but back in 1966 many people thought of the 1966 L78 Chevelle as a "425hp" car.
As I said, would be interesting to see the paperwork on the car.

I was thinking the same thing
1966_L78 Jan 3rd, 07, 3:46 PM the 425 hp 396 was a Vette motor only and 1965 only..biggest HP in a 1966 chevelle was the 375HP 396, not to say it was not dealer installed. If he has paper to back it up I would like to see it. If it is a 375 hp car it is a rere beast in its own right!!!
Well, supposedly some early cars were "badged" as 425 HP 396, but they were IDENTICAL to the 375 HP version (EVERY PART)... THE ONLY DIFFERENCE was the Air Cleaner decal, and the HP rating ON PAPER...
He said they special ordered the car with a 425 horse 396 which i have been told they only put out 7 or 8 cars with this engine.
That IS TOTAL BS!!! Chevrolet has absolutely NO records, and especially back when it was new, how would ANYONE know they only built 7 or 8... And you can be sure, IF it was "ordered" that way, there would be others that would have ordered it too (unless it was some really costly option like L88, ZL1, Z16, etc...)...
dreis454 Jan 3rd, 07, 3:49 PM ^^ easy Tony, don't blow a head gasket. He is just misinformed

Another 396/425 L78 has surfaced.
5rees, send me a PM. I own one of these cars and know of a second car in california. I can show you original documentation on both.
These 425 hp rated chevelles are unfamiliar to many people on this site and hence, many will tell you that the these cars do not exist. I have accumulated much info on these cars and am willing to share this original info with you.
Send me a PM. Thanks
