: Reverse lights acting weird

Hi guys...

Here's the deal. I've got a 67 Malibu with a newer floor shift Hurst Pro-Matic shifter hooked up to a T350 auto trans. The shifter itself has the reverse switch attached to the side of the linkage which controls when the reverse lights. Here's the weird part. When the car is first started and shifted down into reverse the lights come on like they're supposed to but when shifted back up into drive they still stay on and then go off when it's shifted into nuetral and park? Now when I shift the linkage down in to low-1 or low-2 then into drive the lights go off. The shifter itself has a slight amount of play (within the gears) even though it's one of those shifters that is a "ratchet-type" in 1st-2nd-3rd but has to be raised up and shifted into reverse and park because of the detents.

The shifter can actually be moved back and forth about an inch to give you an idea of how much "play" there is.

My question is this...

There doesn't seem to be any adjustment whatsoever in the shifter to "tighten up the play" and would this cause the switch to activate at the wrong time to turn my reverse lights on and off or would there be a problem with the switch? I don't want to have to ratchet the shifter down into low-2 every time I drive it just to turn the lights off.

I've thought about changing the shifter to get rid of the play. Maybe I need to contact Hurst about this?

What do you guys recommend?
