: lifting body questions

im fixing to lift the body on the 67. the front clip is off and theres no engine. can anyone give me some pointers. whats the best way to go about this.

It really depends on what kind of equipment you have.I pulled the frame off my chevelle in my garage with just a couple of jacks,jack stands and some horses with 6x6's.You need to diconnect anything that would interfere with the seperation,like wiring steering shaft ect.Then remove the body bolts.I jacked up on the front pinchwelds by having a jack on each side,then putting stands under it when i got it as high as i could,then did the same in the back.Once i had enough room between the fram and the body i slid 6x6's in and jacked up on each end of thm until i could get a saw horse under them.Then i rolled the frame out.I'm sure there are better and safer ways,but it worked ok.Heres a few pics. http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/25ebf0f1/bc/1970+Chevelle/Pictures/removing+the+body.jpg?bcfpcQ.AoiqSSVSg http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/25ebf0f1/bc/1970+Chevelle/Pictures/Mvc-003s.jpg?bcUqcQ.AG6ATQ8IU http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/25ebf0f1/bc/1970+Chevelle/Pictures/Mvc-001s.jpg?bcmqcQ.Ay8W9iXq.

Yeah, what he said. One Member used 4 55 gallon drums with 6x6's another used chain hoists. Some use engine hoists attached to the rood (I won't try that any time soon) Some use engine hoists with chains to the seatbelt attachment holes. Get a bunch of buddies to help you pick it up. One member even used a discarded washing machin. I thought that was CLASSIC!!

I have done it two ways. Both involve the use of a cherry picker. When I lifted the body off my Chevelle I borrowed two Aircraft tiedown straps from work and just looped them around the body and lifted it with the picker. Only problem was you had to have a pretty high ceiling. Now recently when we lifted the body on the 67' 442 I am currently working on we used two chery pickers to lift it. Using some firewall holes in front and the rear most body mount holes in the rear we just lifted the body high enough to slide the frame out sideways. Do yourself a favor and buy a set of those car dollies, they make life much simplier. Remember to make the car as light as possible. Remove anything that will unbolt from the body, and remove the glass also. Good Luck

6 of us lifted my 67 SS bare body off the frame and set it on jack stands. Had two other guys roll the frame away and position the jacks stands. I wanted to do the rrotisserie thing to clean up the bottom but we did it a little different. Bolted two "L" brackets on the bodies frame mounts and flipped it over on it's side. I still have all the "L" bracket stuff...........there in my way now. Would you like to use it? I'm in Houston

Sweet. do you have any pics of the body on its side using the L brackets? I catn do the rotisserie deal either but would be able to swing this. I need to really clean up the underside

I just have photographs, nothing digital. It worked out great though. We flipped it one night, next night I used the old gas that was in the tank to wipe all the grease and grime off. Washed it down with laquer thinner and sprayed it. We flipped it back down the next weekend. I figured it out in ACAD (computer drafting)but I have lost the file. Basically 2-2" x 2" x 1/4" channel the width of your car plus a foot. You need to weld 2-4" tall stands with a tab to each channel that will permit you to bolt it to your firewall body mounts and also to the rear seat area body mounts. The extra foot hangs out the same side. You weld a 5 foot up right to the extra foot about 5 degrees short of straight up, tilted in towards the car. I put castors on the uprights and also welded in a tie bar. Then we all got on the oppisite side and picked it up till it was straight up. Then just a little further and it rested on the castors on the up rights. I could roll it around by myself. I'll see if I get find a scanner around work here and post them.

Pretty slick. If you ever get the pics scanned, post em. I can visualize what you are saying and it doesnt sound too difficult but a picture "is worth a thousand words".

I just went through this with the 66. I used a cherry picker with a 20' tow strap. I ran it through the trunk, around the braces behind where the back seat is, and back out of the car. I then crisscrossed them and hooked them to the square notches at the bottom of the firewall in the front.I used some pull tie downs for the front to hook it all together. We found a balanced center a couple of inches past the seam where the door glass and the side glass meet. We used 3 people to do it and it went fine. No damage but here is what can happen. We were sandblasting the body on a 20 degree morning and I wanted my wife and dad out of the cold. I rushed reloading the car on the trailer (we blasted at my dads because he has a concrete driveway) and the car tipped the lift to the side and crashed into the roof. Minimal damage but more importantly, no one was injured. My best piece of advise is take it slow. Piece of cake otherwise.
