Need some help guys, I am trying to get my 67 SS back into tip top shape and need
some advice. I have read about "quenching" but never actually tried it. I have a
area in my hood about 1 foot back from the front edge, right along the center ridge that
an "Andre the Giant" put there when he decided he'd sit on the hood of MY car while
some girls were gathered around (many years ago). I wanted to club him, but I figured
he has already taken enough shots to the head. Nevertheless, I have a sunken in area
that dips down about 3/16" and has not distorted the metal, but has the tin can affect,
like when you push on it hard enough to where it wont rebound. The questions: would I heat
from the outside to the center, a little at a time? How much do I heat, do I need to see
a definate temperature change (by discoloration) before I quench with water. Does something
like this take more than one attempt to rectify? Or would I be better off using a dent puller
and getting the ridge back up to height. Would appreciate any help.

Look underneath damaged area, Is there inner structure behind it? If so you may be able to push up inner (gently)add adhesive to stiffen. If you can stiffen from behind, and have eyebrow edge, try a spoon (looks like something to flip burgers) Work contour of eyebrow from side to side toward middle. Quenching (shrinking) can be done with different levels of heat using air or water to cool. Takes a lot of practice and skill. Can do great harm if done improperly. Is the center ridge style line low when damage is up? If so, push ridge into place and use spooning technique on circumferance of damage. Don't be afraid to have experienced metal man take a look, and get advice. Good Luck!
