Hi, has anyone got ideas about the pros and cons of a gear drive vs a double row timing chain. I have 1 of each and I'm not really sure which 1 to fit to my LS7, Cheers Mark.

I like gear drives....especially the 3 gear type(miloden)....because the timing is always bang on. A little noisy....so what.

If you are asking the pros and cons of a gear drive I assume you have no knowldge of them and what they are for. There really in no reason for one on a street driven car. (Personal Preference) IMO.

If you never had one before, my guess is you will grow very tired of the constant noise they produce very quick. If you like a constant loud pitched whine ALL THE TIME, then you might like it.

Gear Drive will carry additional vibrations than a chain.
I have run a gear drive for years: Never a problem.
You can really dial in cam with a good set up.

Once again personal choice.

Just a point. I was at a Street Machine Nationals event when they held them at Duquoin Il. There was a guy working on his Chevelle SS big block. It looked like he was installing a gear drive so I asked if he needed a hand. Well I was starting to help and said so you decided to put in a gear drive huh? (all the parts were off the engine and laid out on cardboard) I looks at me puzzled and says no! I'm taking it off and putting on a double roller chain and gears! I'll be damned if I'm going to listen to that noise all the way back to Tacoma! I got a great laugh out of that one!:beers:

If you have one of each, is the gear drive you have used? If it is, throw it in the trash can. The only motor it will work on is the motor it came off of. This sounds dumb and I'm sure everyone and there mother will challange me on it. But listen to this..... As the gears turn they machine themselves to the clearances of the engine. Another engine won't have the same clearances. I've replaced quite a few used gear drives because they failed. A chain is quieter than a gear set and you can rev them higher. A gear set is not suppoosed to rev higher than 6,000 rpms. If you have the money, the most reliable, quietest set up is belt drive. Big bucks yeah, but you can rev the crap outa them with no worry.

I'm still married, so I guess that proves you can get used to it... :D

If your after noise and valvetrain harmonics go with gear drive.

I recomend a quality cloyes hex adjust chain. Put it in and forget about it. Thats all we use.

The only whine I want from my engine is from a blower. Gear drives arent woth the price of increased harmonics.

I have a Pete Jackson "Noisy" gear drive in my Nova. It is...............noisy.
I am considering switching to a double roller, but I just don't know if I drive the car enough to make it worth my time and $$. The noice would definitely drive me to change if I drove the car more than I do.

Why?? I ran a gear drive once, and I find it very EASY to believe....I dont personally know of anyone that has ever installed a gear drive and kept it in...Mine lasted about a month, couldnt stand it. Please, go with the chain. If you want a whine, save up some money and get a blower.

You find it easy to believe that someone goes on a trip and changes a timing chain in a parking lot instead of enjoying the trip because of gear noise?
I always carry my balancer puller and installer with me on long trips.

Ya' never know what can happen when your out on the road. You could lose a seal, break an axle, ............. Lose a clutch assembly! My then girlfriend, now wife is the one sitting disgusted on the side of the road while we wait for parts to be delivered. This is us on the power tour east in 99. You do what you have to do to get home.
