i will be Doing lots of things to it. I will list them all on this thread but I want to start with is today’s issue.

I am installing 1987 Monte SS wheels on the chevelle I would like to know what's the biggest size tire I can fit in the rear with no chance of rubbing on the frame or body thanks.

My standard tire combo is 275/60R15 on the back and 225/70R15 on the front. That'll give you a 10"-12" footprint in the rear, depending on the brand of tire you use, and the front tires will be a little narrower, but have the same diameter as the rear. Numbers don't lie, but tire manufacturers do. The first number in the tire size is the width of the tread in millimeters, the second number is the percentage of the tread width as your side wall. For example:60% of 275 millimeters is 165. Your side wall would be 165 millimeters high. Having said all of that, no two tires are the same. An advertized 275/60R15 may only have a tread that's 255 mm. Same goes for truck tires. Your 35" tires are more than likely only 33" tall. However, sometimes the sizes are accurate, so this tire size, in this brand, fits fine, but the same tire size, in this brand, rubs the wheelwell. My "standard combo" will fit any brand of tire with those sizes on that car.

I agree with earthquake.

275's on the rear is a very popular selection. however, i would check the offset of those wheels. It my not be possible to run 275's on them. If I remember correctly those wheels may push the tire too far to the outside causing a tire and quarterpanel conflict. Unless of course the backend is jacked up like the old days.

I'm running 275/60's on the rear with a 8.5" rim. - 255/60's on a 7.5" on front. 70 Chevelle

The 275/60 will fit the car but the Monte SS wheel is only 15x7 so it will look a little like a balloon on that narrow of a wheel. A good size tire on that wheel is a 245/60. It fits the wheel and will fit the car fine.

Opinions needed
The car is going to be painted white
1-should I paint the fire wall white
2-should I paint the fender wells/ wheel wells in white
3-or should I paint the above in the factory flat black.

I would keep the inner fenders black. And it's more of a satin, not flat, black. The firewall is your choice as it depends on the look you are after. Here is a poll I ran a while back :

Good luck and keep us posted.

It didn't start as a for sale post. I will not bring up that part of the project again.
