Chevelle 6-71 Dec 27th, 06, 10:25 PM Nice...........:hurray:
New Specs...........? More Gydiup :hurray: Do anything to the 400?
68bye Dec 27th, 06, 10:33 PM Looks like plenty of highway merging power!:D
Bob West Dec 27th, 06, 10:41 PM A little more compression, still a tad under 11-1, mainly a cam swap and freshen, zero decked the block, shave .010 off the heads, had to install two exhaust valve guides and do a valve job, even though heads were new in April, doesnt hurt to have it all fresh. I went from the XR286R to a UD solid roller .708/.708 ,255/263@.050, 283/291@.020 on a 108lsa.
Bob West Dec 27th, 06, 10:43 PM Th400 is just freshened by Ozark Performance, new red clutches and kolene steels, clearances back to spec, and a billet hub. I already had a BTE rev manual valve body in it and the 8" ATI converter.
kjett Dec 27th, 06, 10:47 PM
Chevelle 6-71 Dec 27th, 06, 10:57 PM Nice..........................:beers:
Chris_69_SS Dec 27th, 06, 10:58 PM Bob,
Looks good and I bet it`ll perform even better.
I like that cam.....should pick up some. If you don`t pick up with the Vic Jr I`m gonna run out and get a 2P intake myself!
Get it to the track!
Chris
yanniz Dec 27th, 06, 11:02 PM looks good Bob....whose headers are these?
Bob West Dec 27th, 06, 11:04 PM They are Hedmans, I had them coated in Joplin,Mo. at www.performancecoatingsplus.com

DragRacer Dec 28th, 06, 2:32 AM Looks good Bob!
I'm sure we'll be hearing about some new bests in a few weeks! ;)
What did your guy end up doing with the thrust issue? Have you figured out what caused the problem?
driver Dec 28th, 06, 3:08 AM Are we talking high 9's? My heads are ready except for flowing them which he seems to be taking his time on that part for some reason. Good luck on the fresh motor.
71454Chevelle Dec 28th, 06, 4:29 AM Purdy
Bob, what brand of cam is that?
427L88 Dec 28th, 06, 6:34 AM Ok, now you have enough ballz to race my 427.
KIdding. Sweet upgrades Bob! Hope she ET's well "out of the box"!
Bob West Dec 28th, 06, 8:23 AM Thanks guys!!
Jason, the crank was welded up and machined back to size. Not sure exactly what caused it except he did notice upon assembly this time the thrust didnt have enough clearance and had to open it up a bit, now has .0055 clearance. I wonder if it was a little tight during the first build and caused/started the premature wear?? Others will say its the high internal pressures of the trans caused by the man vb, could have been the old converter? maybe flashing the converter from 12-1500 every pass? There are several things that could have caused it, nothing definitive, builder said everything else looked great inside, 450 passes and 2 full years wasnt too bad.
Ron, I dont really want high 9's unless I spray it to get there, with all the current rules and future diaper rule? I'll be very happy with 10.40 or quicker anytime its unloaded. I was very happy with cars performance before the freshen, its mainly a cam swap for me and others to see if that is what is was lacking, along with my too small heads ;) After the teardown the builder figured the compression was closer to 10-1 after the headswap from using the .039 FP gasket, it is now right at 10.7-1. He shaved .010 off the block and .010 off the heads, all pistons are now .000-.001 out of the hole, they were .009-.010 in the hole, so the quench should be much better also.
Darren, its one of UD Harolds now Custom Camshafts solid rollers, billet core, everwear gear.
If all goes well and the weather cooperates, I'll get some shakedown passes racing at Centerville,Ar Jan.6th. www.centervilledragway.com first race of the year around here. I've never been to the track, they too run 1000ft like my home track, track elevation is between 300-400ft vs 1400ft at the home track. I never really did get to make any passes this fall in the real good air, so looking forward to this race.
BillsCamino Dec 28th, 06, 8:48 AM Glad to see it coming back together Bob! Anxious to hear the results.
Is that the cam Garret has been wanting you to install? ;)
Bob West Dec 28th, 06, 9:37 AM No it isnt Bill, I decided to use Harolds advice, am using one of his cams. Jason ran it thru his sim program and it made 30hp/50tq more than my current cam, I had him run 4 cams I think and this one made the biggest improvement. I mainly wanted a cam with lift that would make better use of the heads to see what it would do.
Skeeveman Dec 28th, 06, 10:55 AM Look'n good man. So you're close to Joplin? Thats some of my old stomp'n ground. When I come back home for a visit, maybe we can butt heads, I'd love to check out your 72!
joespanova Dec 28th, 06, 7:46 PM Bob.........see you at the "Chevellebration " thingy, in the spring if Bill goes........he says he plans on handin' everyone their "arse" again! :D
Bob West Dec 28th, 06, 8:51 PM I fired it up today, sounds wicked and revs quick, I might give Bill a run for his money ;) I just wish they'd prep the track a little better in Nashville, we both had problems last year, and then I hook in the final round and breakout.
crankitup Dec 28th, 06, 8:55 PM This is a scam! I went over to Bob's house last night and saw this motor for my self. These pictures are not the same motor! The motor he just dropped in had a blue colored block and the the distributer was in front. I can smell a trader.
JUNK YARD DOG Dec 28th, 06, 9:01 PM looking good bob and glad she fired without any problems.im sure there will be some new best this spring.goood luck.
Rowdy Dec 28th, 06, 9:17 PM Bob,
What heads did you get last April? Before?
Did your previous cam also have 108 lsa?
How stop and go friendly was it on the street, basically operating under 2500rpm? Idle speed in nuetral and gear? Vacuum at idle? Just curious how practical 108 was outside of track use. Originally, I was pretty gung ho for 110lsa for my 540, but ultimately settled on 112.
If you don't mind me asking, what did the new cam from Harold set you back?
How about time wise?
Bob West Dec 28th, 06, 9:20 PM NO WAY IN HE!! Trey, I put a 12 bolt in my car just so I could say it doesnt have Ferd parts in it :D
As quick as it revs I might have to shift when the tach shows 5k just so I shift by 6-6500 ;)

crankitup Dec 28th, 06, 9:34 PM Bob, that 351 must be putting out some serious HP if it is going to pull that big old green machine and you!
p.s. Thanks again for loaning me the tranny jack.
Bob West Dec 28th, 06, 10:04 PM Rowdy, I had 781's on it before 2.25/1.88's with a mild port job. I now have the Brodix RaceRite Oval ports and I'm anxious to see how they perform with this new cam. I think the little ports might be suprising for a 270cc port, we'll see. The old cam gross lift was right where the heads flow best, this cam should let the heads flow to their potential providing they are not a restriction, and I dont think they will be with a 6k shift point 6500rpm max, of course I'm still running a dual plane too with 1.75" of spacer on top, I love the torque!!!
Harold Sutton Dec 29th, 06, 2:17 PM Hi Bob, Do you really think the weather will allow racing in January, even in central Arkansas? I think we should neuter the guy who said you have a Ford engine in there.
VinnyLSS572 Dec 29th, 06, 6:37 PM Way to go Bob,It looks great
Vinny
40Coupe Dec 29th, 06, 8:02 PM Nice tranny. ;)
crankitup Dec 29th, 06, 9:25 PM Harold, he could try, but he would never be able to catch me with that ford in there.
JOHN WILSON Jan 1st, 07, 10:19 PM Bob.........see you at the "Chevellebration " thingy, in the spring if Bill goes........he says he plans on handin' everyone their "arse" again! :D
Oh?
Thanks guys!!

Bob, do yourself a favor and buy/borrow (if you don't already have one) a dial gauge/magnetic base and keep an eye on the thrust after each track trip for the first few trips.
Looks good!
40Coupe Jan 1st, 07, 10:26 PM John- Sounds like you need to head to CB '07 and get your arse handed to ya. ;)
Bob West Jan 1st, 07, 10:31 PM Bill may be quicker, but who was in the finals ;) gotta cut them lights when bracket racing :D
