: MSD boxes....where to put it?
Brotherjoe Dec 27th, 06, 12:01 PM Hey guys, I have a 1971 Chevelle with a healthy small block, A/C and a pretty stock looking engine compartment.
I got a new MSD box and I was looking for a spot to put it. I have no room on the firewall at all. A/C gets in the way.The only spot where I can find is on the right fender well.
How about mounting it under the dash?
Anyone have a nice spot to put it?
Someone suggested to put it in the glove box, but then where do I put my owners manual and other important paper work?
I am not opposed to mounting it under the hood, but I'd like it not to stick out so much.
I would post a pic of the engine compartment, but I have no idea how to.
Xtreme70SS396 Dec 27th, 06, 12:05 PM TONS of room behind the dash, and plenty of spots to mount it there also - that's where I plan on putting mine one of these days.
furball8994 Dec 27th, 06, 12:08 PM MSD boxes are happer in the car, Unless its the off-road version which is sealed. If you don't want it in your glove box, I've seen them mounted on the center hump. You could also mount it on the inside firewall behind the glove box.
micky69396 Dec 27th, 06, 12:36 PM I just put one in the glove box in a 70
Bowtie-72 Dec 27th, 06, 12:58 PM I was thinking of hiding it underneath the front part of my center console, but haven't taken measurements, so I don't know if it will fit. There's quite a bt of unused space in there.
DougA Dec 27th, 06, 2:27 PM Mine is mounted on top of the glovebox, just remove the dash pad for easy acess.

So, if I remove the dash pad, I should find a nice area to mount it? That sounds like a great idea if it's that easy.
Chevelle 6-71 Dec 27th, 06, 7:01 PM If ya got the room put it inside - less heat. Or if you really want user friendly -

Absolutely,my 6al box and the tach adapter have been mounted there forever ,no problems.
LMacdonald Dec 27th, 06, 8:34 PM I have a 66. I mounted my MSD inside just above the steering column.
Here are a couple of pics

70 SS LS-5 Dec 27th, 06, 8:38 PM I mounted my ignition box and timing computer on the carpet on the trans hump under the dash. It's not in the way, looks cool and is always a good conversation starter with the non-car people.

Jepprox Dec 27th, 06, 9:40 PM These all sound like great install locations. I just have one concern and looking for some input. I have a MSD 6AL and wondering about the noise from the MSD box. I have yet to fire up the motor with this box and the blaster coil. I heard from one racer that his MSD box had a very audible whine and that I would not want to put in the interior of the car. Especially if you plan to listen to a stereo. That would be a second concern. This MSD box gonna mess with a nice audio system?
DougA Dec 27th, 06, 9:53 PM I still have my original AM-FM radio,FM no problem but I get a buzz on the AM unless I'm on a flamethrower station(50,000 watts).
70 SS LS-5 Dec 28th, 06, 12:51 AM I've got an aftermarket Alpine stereo/cd player and never had any noise. And the two boxes are 6-7 inches from the radio. If you have a problem you can put a filter on the line.

Jepprox Dec 28th, 06, 1:49 PM Mike, thanks for the response. What model MSD box are you running? Anyone running the 6AL, 7, etc?? I would love to here your comments. Just curious if this can become a major noise/interference issue. I plan to do some major mods to my firewall to smooth it out and the current plan is to weld up a bracket on the interior side of the firewall to mount my MSD box, coil and two-step module (pro street). Gonna run a couple of audio amplifiers and six or so speakers.
I mounted mine on the back of my AM radio.

Hi Jepprox, I was running an MSD-6AL box and a multi-step retard box on the trans hump, then I switched to a Crane HI-6N and an MSD timing computer. Both configurations work well on the trans hump, no problem at all.
:beers:

Ralph67 Dec 29th, 06, 2:20 PM My 6-al is mounted to the heater box behind the heater control on my 67, no noise with a good radio and amp, and it stays cooler in the summer with air blowing through the box. Ralph
Jepprox Dec 29th, 06, 4:26 PM Ralph, does the MSD box itself make any noise?

Ralph67 Jan 1st, 07, 12:40 PM No i haven't noticed anything.
kacp-o Jan 1st, 07, 3:50 PM Thanks guys for this thread...I had the same dilemma a couple days ago and the above the glove box approach worked perfectly.
:beers:
Johnny O Jan 1st, 07, 5:43 PM I thought about putting mine inside the car next year.....less heat, mainly, and I dont really care if it is seen from outside anyway...but my concern with mounting it in or above the glove box would be ventilation....do you think it would get enough air flow to keep it cool enough? I dont know how hot they run, but Im sure they need a way to dissapate the heat.
nozhol Jan 1st, 07, 9:16 PM This isn't my car, but I liked his idea and may use it myself, so I kept the photo. It was from an attachment in a post from the Body Shop Forum awhile back, but I can't remember who it was. Looks like he created a recessed cavity above the glove box and it looks pretty clean. If this is from your car or you know who's it is, speak up so we can pick your brain.
