Can you open your trunk??

If so open it and look at the area right under the key hole on the back side of the trunk lid. You should see a small slot about an inch long. In that slot is the locking tang that holds the key lock in the trunk lid. reach in with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the tang out. You can now slide the key lock out tword the rear of the lid.

The rod will come out with the keylock. You should now be able to see how it goes back together.

Good luck getting the locking tang back in. It was a real bear for me.

OK
You have a hole in your trunk lid where a key lock used to be, is this correct?

IF so then no problem. Look in the hole you will see a small vertical slot about 3 inches in from the surface of the lid. That slot will hold one end (the smooth end) of the rod. The other end of the rod attaches to the key lock.

The trick here is correctly attaching the rod to the key lock. The small tab on the end of the rod should go behind the spring on the back side of the key lock. Then the rod and lock as an assembly are installed into the hole in the lid. Line up the rod so it engages the small vertical slot in the latch. The Push the lock in until flush. The rod and keylock will bend in relation to one another to allow a flush fit. (the spring holding the rod will resist your attemps at pushing the lock flush, just push harder.)

Once you have the lock and rod held flush to the lid then you must install the keeper. The keeper is a U shaped piece of sheetmetal that will slip behind the keylock and hold it to the lid. It slips into the slot below the keylock on the underside of the lid. This the most difficult part of this job. I was able to get it started with needlenose pliers but I had to resort to a hammer and punch to drive it home.

Good luck

wantedrodinco, I am in the exact same situation as you. I just got a 72 chevelle and it didnt have the trunk lock in place, so i got a full set of keys, becuase there were no keys anyway, but I am having problems with that little spring, what does it attatch to? The hook on the outside of the spring hooks onto that little hook on the side of the lock cylinder right? and if so, where does the other hook on the inside of the spring hook onto? can someone help clear this up?
