It doesn't hurt to take the tank out, especially when doing any welding in the general area.
While the tank is out, it would give you a chance to check the top of the tank and bottum floor of the trunk for rust. I took my tank out and the top had boo-koos of surface rust.
It also gave me a chance to change the sock filter attached to the fuel sending unit that is in the tank. After 30 years, the original filter, attached to the sender unit is toast. Also, the filter is unavailable in most parts stores, the GM part number is #5651711. It is a little longer than the original but it will fit.
