: lifting body
72_Chevelle Jul 21st, 03, 11:24 AM I decided to go with the body bushings from PST,going to give them a call one day this week to order them. I was wondering if their is anyway that I can lift the body so that I could clean the top of the frame and the underneath of body, is it possible to lift the body and sit it on jack stands or something right above the frame. I would like to take the body off the frame but I don't have the room to do that. The engine/tranny is out of the car and all suspension is off.The interior is also out too,so it's just the body and frame sitting there.

Well if you just want to take the body up 1 foot or so....get some cinder blocks....2-3 per stack will do nicely. Get 2 8 foot sections of 4x4 posts or 3. Put a jack under the front of the car where the tranny tunnel is and set a 6x6 block on the top of the jack and raise the body til you get to the desired height. Add blocks of wood as needed. When you get it as high as you want it....Stack the appropriate number of cinder blocks and slide a 4x4 under the car and let both ends rest on the blocks on either side of the car. Repeat until the whole body is off the frame. The reverse to let it back down. Undo the body bolts first, but you already know that.
deejay Jul 21st, 03, 2:39 PM I basicaly did the same thing as Yenko, only I did one side at a time. It helped maintain the position of the body to the frame. Also, don't do as I did, and forget to disconnect the E-Brake cable at the firewall redface.gif

So after you get to the height you want and stack up the cinder blocks, you place the 4x4 the width of the car on the blocks, then sit the body back down on the 4x4 that is on the cinder blocks. I just wanted to make sure I had it pictured right in my head.
After I get everything cleaned up and painted, what is the best way to make sure that the body is alinged up with the frame right when I lower it back down.
69boo307 Jul 22nd, 03, 12:02 PM I did one side at a time, used my floor jack with a board to distribute the pressure. After loosening all the bushing bolts, I completely removed the bolts on the side I wanted to raise. I raised it a couple inches, and used a pry bar to get a little more clearance right at the bushings as I did them, it helped get them in and out without raising the body very much.
mike69ss Jul 22nd, 03, 12:14 PM Looks like you got lots of input on lifting the body. With the car stripped down like you did it should not be that hard to lift the body.
PST use to not include the steel mushrooms and washers you will need for the mounts. If yours are fine then you can just clean them up apply finish you like and reuse, but if some are badly rusted you will have to find a replacements and most vendors only sell complete sets – most only with their rubber mounts. It’s been a few years since I did mine so things may be different now but still worth asking PST.
YenkoChevelle69 Jul 22nd, 03, 7:20 PM YEs, lower the body onto the 4 by 4 that is stretched across the blocks. PS.....Don't worry to much about alignment...the frames are gonna shock you when you see how light they really are. You can muscle it over a few inches.
