No need to remove it. You can just cut a slit down the middle of it and spread the material apart about an inch and weld it back together.

Ya, maybe that, or just heat and jack with a porta power to stretch the metal to get the right clearance.

How much of the tunnel do you need? I have a 72 that is completely rusted out but the tunnel starting from about an inch above the floor pan survived.

For the Tremec conversion in the Nova I plan to use a tunnel piece from a parts car and cut it off taller than the piece I remove so there is only one seam to deal with.

Here are my tunnel surgery pics, I cut the top off and sectioned it up about an inch.

That looks great, but how are you going to get the carpet to fit. I had a shop put a US Gear overdrive in my '71 Elky, and he butchered the transmission hump. After that my carpet didn't fit, so I took it to another shop to get new carpet, but they said that factory style carpet couldn't be made to fit. I ended up doing it myself, but it's not perfect.
Sorry for the rant.

I am replacing the carpet w/ lightweight aftermarket carpet. So it will not be the factory pre-molded piece. The entire roll weighs ~11lbs and that should cover the trunk too.
