: Cost of a quality paint job
kmchugh Mar 3rd, 04, 10:01 PM I just came home from the paint store. I am in sticker shock! I bought PPG products; etch primer and catalyst, K38 surfacer and hardener, Deltron 2000 DBC and reducer, clear and reducer and hardener. Aircraft stripper, sand paper, weld thru primer, seam sealer, wax/grease remover, $1300. Sharp T1 gun, compressor, National Detroit DA sander, plumbing, air filter, coalescer, and dessicator, $1250. Another $100 for incidentals comes to a whopping $2650. I think I just saved about $7500 on this paint job. I hope my skills are up to the task. :D

Texas70 Mar 4th, 04, 12:57 PM When do you plan on shooting it Kevin ?
I'd like to drop by and see the action if possible. I will be shooting mine in a few months, but figure I could learn something in the meantime by watching you shoot yours if that would be OK...... graemlins/waving.gif E-mail me...
I'm in Katy
GRN69CHV Mar 4th, 04, 4:09 PM Just out of curiosity - 1250.00 for the air compressor and tools doesn't build in a whole lot of money for the compressor. What compressor are you planning to use?
kmchugh Mar 4th, 04, 4:56 PM grn69:
The compressor is the 60 gal (c.a. 4.5 hp)one from home depot ($440). I just bought 50 ft of stainless steel tubing to increase the length between my compressor and the filters. I am using an air filter (0.01 micron), and oil/water coalescer, and then a dessicator. I plan to use a membrane filter at the gun. The T1 gun was $275, and the ND DA sander was $175. I think this set up will do job. And please no replies about it ain't gonna work!

storm Mar 4th, 04, 7:39 PM wow all that money fly me in i,ll paint it for you.
Dave Mar 4th, 04, 11:01 PM I know what you mean, just on a smaller scale. Went to the ppg store and bought a quart of dp90, pint of hardener, and some reducer. Also got a cheapo gravity gun, regulator, and a water separator. 200.00 bucks, but my suspension parts look gooood. Was really suprised how well the gun worked, Think I even used it pretty well graemlins/thumbsup.gif

GRN69CHV Mar 5th, 04, 7:43 AM Kevin,
When I set mine up in the garage, I ran a 1" steel pipe down 2 sides of the garage before I intalled my water separator. I also intalled a drip leg with a 24" dropoff tee'd in the line prior to the water sep.. The steel pipe acts likes a heat sink and really cools the comp. air down which in turn gets the water vapor out. If I get ambitious, I am considering running the piping back to make a 50' loop to add more heat sink capacity. It gets pretty humid here in Penna. also in the summer, not quite as bad as Texas, but wet just the same.

I have about 20' of 1/2" black steel pipe which is not enough. I bought the 50' of 3/8" stainless to add length. It is coiled, so I am going to see if it will fit in my cooler with ice water. That ought to get the air temp down below the dew point. As you know we get 110% humidity in Houston, escpecially since I am 1 block in from Clear Lake.
