: Calculating Horsepower from 1/4 mile speed & vehicle weight?

I know I have seen a formula for calculating horsepower based upon 1/4 mile speed and vehicle weight. From what I remember the formula is supposed to be fairly accurate. What would be the approx. horsepower for a 4100 lb. car that runs 112 mph in the 1/4 mile. Does the formula provide engine HP or rear wheel HP or both.

Thanks, Joel

Joel,

I have the one your looking for at my site. I have no way of telling if it is accurate or not though. If you can prove it one way or another, please let me know. One person that used it told me he felt it was pretty close.

Hp=(mph/234)^3*lbs = (112/234)^3*4100 = 450 hp...

Whether engine or RWHP, dont know, but a friend of mine hammers 117 mph with his 450 HP LPE 383 3500 lbs camaro, according to the formula it is about 440 HP, close to the engine output.

but it is a very general anyway...

you also need to take into accont the traction/part throttle etc etc
