: Where do you connect the parking brake cable on a 69 Chevelle SS 396??
Check6 Dec 23rd, 06, 2:33 PM I am replacing the rear brake shoes along with all the hardware and new wheel cylinders on my 69 Chevelle. The parking brake cable is just sitting in there . Where does it connect and how does it attach? It looks like it's just sitting on the rear brake shoe. Does anyone have a picture of the rear brake assembly? I dimantled one at a time so I could reference where everything goes. These brakes seem overly complicated compared to the Mustangs I used to own. Any help would be appreciated, would like to finish the job.
Thanks,
Fred
charbilly2001 Dec 23rd, 06, 6:42 PM The third large peice of metal in your rear brakes is your emergency brake arm. It is to that arm that the cable attaches. If you have already attached the rear brake shoe, take it off for now since you need to attach the "E" cable to its arm before you attach the arm to the rear brake shoe.
You'll note a stud sticking out of one end of the arm which has a groove around the end of the stud. The other end of that arm is bent into a "U" shape and has a "slotted" hole through the "U".
The first thing you have to do is to slide the spring on the "E" brake cable back sufficiently such the the end of the cable can be dropped into that "U" shaped end. Its difficult so be patient. That spring can be a devil. Afetr you have afixed the cable to the lower end of the arm then you can stick the arm's stud through the rear brake shoe. It goes in from inside to the outside of the shoe. There should also be a "wave" washer ( made of spring steel) that goes on the stud before you put the stud through the shoe. That washer is an "anti rattle" device. Leave it out and you'll regret it :)
Once you have the arm and washer properly through the attaching hole on the rear brake shoe take the "U" clip and insert it across the groove in the stud and compress the open end of the "U" such that the clip retains the "E" arm to the rear shoe.
After you have accomplished that reassemble the rest of your brakes. :)
One more piece of advice. make sure that you distinguish between the rear shoe and the front shoe. The rear shoe is ALWAYS the shoe with the MOST lining on it.
LeoP Dec 23rd, 06, 9:13 PM No stud on a Chevelle Ebrake arm, it hooks into a V shaped slot in the upper part of the rear shoe.
Check6 Dec 23rd, 06, 10:01 PM I must be missing something. The only large piece of metal I have is the flat adjuster plate used for the self adjuster. There is a V shaped slot in the top of the shoe but there is no way the cable will go into that and I don't know how it would expand the brake shoes if it did. I will take pictures of my set up and maybe you can guide me from there. I maybe missing the obvious.
Thanks,
Fred

Check6 Dec 23rd, 06, 11:34 PM Great pics!! Still can't make out where the end of the cable is attached. It ends at the back shoe but where and how is it attached. It seems the view I need is covered by the brake self adjuster.
Thanks,
Fred

Check6 Dec 23rd, 06, 11:56 PM I don't have the bottom spring connected yet. The parking brake cable is dangling looking for a home. LOL
Thanks,
Fred
Check6 Dec 24th, 06, 12:01 AM This is a brief breakdown of the right side brake. Could you tell me where the cable attaches and how?
Thanks,
Fred
Dean Dec 24th, 06, 12:10 AM I think the piece hidden behind the brake shoe looks simular to this one.
(I didn't feel up to pulling my wheel/drum)
It seems to be missing in your picture
Check6 Dec 24th, 06, 12:16 AM Hi Dean,
That's what I'm looking for. I don't have these pieces. Is there anyone that carries these in aftermarket or has a set they are not using. I guess without these I have no parking brake. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred
1badss396 Dec 24th, 06, 12:20 AM Its been a while since I did mine I think the parking brake hooks in the 2 white circled things on this picture.

Don't think so Brad, those look like the self adjuster peices that operate the adjuster wheel.
I'll check in the morning and see if I have them on the old 10 bolt out behind the shop, IF so you can have them.
I'm sure they are a dealer only part since they don't come in the hardware kit.
Check6 Dec 24th, 06, 12:51 AM Hi Dean,
If you could get those for me I will be in your debt. If you could include any of the attaching hardware, that would be helpful and maybe a pencil drawing of where exactly it installs on the rear brake shoe. Hope I'm not asking too much. Let me know what the cost will be and email me at Warbirds1@cox.net
Thanks,
so much
Fred
1badss396 Dec 24th, 06, 1:01 AM Oh well I tried.:clonk:Just cant remember it was a while ago when I had to do my rear brakes and it was a PITA to figure it out. I do rember that the end of the emergency brake cable just hooks into a part that attaches to the brake shoe I think, LOL:clonk:What do I know nothing:D
Dean Dec 24th, 06, 1:06 AM You think YOU can't remember LOL, wait till you get to be an old fart like me.
charbilly2001 Dec 24th, 06, 2:54 AM No stud on a Chevelle Ebrake arm, it hooks into a V shaped slot in the upper part of the rear shoe.
Yup. My bad! Leo is correct. Makes the job easier too.
1badss396 Dec 24th, 06, 1:18 PM http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7844/brakepartnc2.jpg The emergency brake just hooks to the left side of this thingy (pictured) now I remember, hehe
charbilly2001 Dec 25th, 06, 3:36 AM Guys. He and I exchanged PM's. He doesn't have the emergency brake arms. No idea why?? Can anyone help him? The only ones I have I use.

Dean Dec 25th, 06, 11:48 AM Fred, I checked and I do have everything (assuming the parts from a 70 - 10 bolt are the same.)
You're welcome to the parts for the cost of shipping if you want.
I won't have time to do it until Tuesday or Wednesday though.
Check6 Dec 26th, 06, 3:50 PM Hi All,
Just want to thank everybody again for all your help in solving my problem. I have located the necessary parts to get my e-brakes working properly. You guys are the best and there is such a wealth of knowledge on this site. Best part it's freely given. Thanks again guys and have a great New Year!

meb Dec 27th, 06, 11:28 PM Check6, you did reverse the self adjuster right :)? They go towards the front of the car. I saw on your pics that you had then towards the back brake shoe.
1badss396 Dec 27th, 06, 11:45 PM Check6, you did reverse the self adjuster right :)? They go towards the front of the car. I saw on your pics that you had then towards the back brake shoe. Well mine must be wrong also?? Take a look at beginning of the thread at mine. I installed them the same way I removed them?
Check6 Dec 28th, 06, 9:44 AM I Believe the self adjusters are installed properly. My brake service manual shows the star wheel closest to the secondary shoe. I have never seen self adjusters on the front. Is this something specific to Chevelles??
Sorry for the confusion, you are correct :clonk:
Nice work on your car and best of luck with your project.
Check6 Dec 28th, 06, 8:08 PM Not a problem, you can go crazy looking at all these springs. LOL Once I get the car back on it's wheels I'll get some pics so you can check it out.
Thanks,
Fred
charbilly2001 Dec 31st, 06, 1:29 AM After you take a few thousand of those springs off and put them back on again it gets easy.
