: Air Ride Suspenion Help !!!
Ricks70ss Dec 23rd, 06, 11:41 AM HI everyone: Ok I see these cars with the big air ride shocks on the front. Can someone show me a web site for these? I heard their big $$$'s But I'd like to check them out. I'm thinking of putting a Hotchkis or Global west suspension under the 70 chevelle. To make it handle better. I own a 1993 super coupe thunderbird. And that bird handles like a sports car in the turns. I'd like something close to that for the chevelle. any Idea's. thanks RICK:thumbsup:
Derek69SS Dec 23rd, 06, 12:31 PM There's really no benefit to air-bags in place of a coil-spring except that you can make height adjustments with the flip of a switch, and they can ride a bit softer. Performance-wise, a spring wins every time.
As for who makes good air-spring setups, I've heard great things about these guys. http://www.ridetech.com/
As for Hotchkis & Global West... I like to call them "overpriced mediocrity" ;) You'll get better performance for less with one of the packages from www.scandc.com.
Ricks70ss Dec 23rd, 06, 12:37 PM HEY DEREK: Am I right . does NPD sell the same kind of front end? as far a tubular? and is it any cheaper? I should have just e mailed you first.. Bye the way. Does any one know when the next Northstar meeting is? I could go to the last one. family were coming into town that day. Figures!! thanks RICK
Derek69SS Dec 23rd, 06, 1:05 PM Third Saturday of January :) I'm not sure what NPD offers (don't have their catalog) but I strongly suggest SC&C
Since you run 15" wheels, I'd keep the stock spindles with tall ball-joints, and adjustable upper A-arms (Stage II package). In the rear, Edelbrock or Currie uppers with new rubber bushings in the housing, and depending on your budget, Currie lowers, or boxed stock lowers would be fine.
The rest of the combination would be picking the right springs, shocks, and sway-bars. This all depends on how smooth you want it to ride, and of course, your budget. :)
Chris R Dec 26th, 06, 3:57 AM I would say that almost everyone that is after air ride suspension is not intrested in turning a corner like a Ferrari. Its all about the look of changing the height.
darren@ridetech Dec 26th, 06, 4:37 PM Yes, we have complete kits that will work with the stock arms or StrongArms. I have a 70 that I just installed our complete Street Challenge kit on.

I have to disagree here Derek. I was of the same feeling until Run Through the Hills II. Not only did the Air Ride cars do very well, but Bretts Big Ass GSX set the fastest time of the day (except a race preped ZO6 on race tires). Of particular interest to the weight challenged gang here at Team Chevelle, Brett's GSX killed all the Camaros best times and is almost 1000LBS heavier. The other cars, the blue 66 / 67 Chevelle and the black 70-73 Camaro both kicked ass also.
I am impressed enough that we became distributors for Air Ride products, and I have decided to use the Air bar set up on my own Second Gen project.
Derek69SS Dec 26th, 06, 7:30 PM I've heard a little about that... there's a lot of variables that could have a pretty significant impact on that test. How much of that was the driver, and just having the car dialed in very well compared to others that may not have been set up very well? Also, what other suspension mods did the GSX have, and others not have, that may have given it an advantage over the competition?
I guess I should have clarified... a PROPERLY CHOSEN spring will beat a properly adjusted air bag every time. ;) I will give some well-deserved credit to ART for some of the development they have done in the past few years, but I'm still not convinced they'll outperform a spring in an apples-to-apples comparison.
Also, what did that car have in it that made it weigh almost 1000lbs heavier? Most A-bodies weigh in anywhere between 3500-3800 sometimes less, and I'm not aware of too many sub-3000lb street F-body cars.
ProdigyCustoms Dec 26th, 06, 10:37 PM Well, This happened with the same driver in all cars. And that same driver had driven the Camaros more times, in fact the driver drove the camaros as many times as they could before the track closed to get THE best time. He drove the GSX once! I would think DSEs test car was set up well, also SteveOs street fighter has been dialed a long time. Also, it was not a horsepower thing as Brett makes about 500, and the Camaros did also, which again were lighter.
The GSx was a 1/4 second faster then any Camaro. It's just a fact. Seen it with my own eyes. Guess I might not have believed it either till I saw it.
Bill Howell was so impressed he ordered Air Ride for his 70 Chevelle project!
Derek69SS Dec 26th, 06, 10:44 PM I would think DSEs test car was set up well, also SteveOs street fighter has been dialed a long time.I guess I'll have to do some searching on those cars to see if I can find details on their setups. I'm still skeptical, but anything's possible I guess :beers:
ProdigyCustoms Dec 26th, 06, 11:00 PM DSEs test car runs their new subframe, quadra link, a nice 383 and 6 speed, SteveOs Street fighter runs a modified Wayne Due subframe and drop leafs, with a 406 and 4L60E paddle shifted automatic. Both those cars have a lot of track time. Also, Air Rides 2nd place Camaro Challenge black 70-73 Camaro was only .08 slower then the fastest Camaro with a 383 , 700R

You will become a believer. Air Ride is not just for pickups and lowriders anymore.
