: 70-72 Hood Hinge
Hi-po SS 454 Dec 22nd, 06, 9:20 PM OPGI shows Original GM Hood hinges available. Very expensive, each one. Reproduction hinges available 1/3 of the price. Has anyone used either one. Could use 2 new ones, but not sure how the repro will work. Or even how much trouble the original will be. Both come without springs. Any help on this, appreciated.
allgm Dec 22nd, 06, 10:05 PM the new gm hinges i've seen are junk compared to the old gm hinges.i've got a pair of aftermarket hinges that works decent.if your a perfectionist your better off getting your old ones them rebuilt.
Robinls5 Dec 22nd, 06, 11:31 PM 1970 Hinges--------Hinges for a Cowl Induction 1970 have the part number stamped on them.
Hinges for a domed hood Have the little Fisher body stagecoach stamped on the hinge. The stagecoach is about 3/16-1/4" wide and you will also find a letter "E" near the stagecoach. This is the I.D. of correct hinges for a 70 Domed or Cowl hood. Bob
Skeeveman Dec 23rd, 06, 9:44 AM You sure your current ones are bad? Hood hinges rarely go bad from use, they just tend to get crap in all the pivot points and dry out and like to bid up a lot, making you think they are warn out. If you clean them up real good, and grease them up, I bet that they probably work just like new! :)
I'm not saying they can't go bad though, I did have one on mine that was shot.
70isfine Dec 23rd, 06, 9:47 AM Tried a set of repro hinges.Junk Couldnt get the hood to line up and they seem like they wanted to twist under the weight of the open hood.

My painter said they were loose. I'll have to check them closer.

Repo is $44 ea
69ssmike Dec 23rd, 06, 4:52 PM I plan on trying this with my 69... Heat the rivets cherry red and give em a a good smack with a hammer and chisel, you can see a cross where they were put on originally. It should tighten them up unless they are really bad.
Bowtie-72 Dec 26th, 06, 12:13 PM You can still get new springs from GM for pretty cheap.
LateNight72 Dec 26th, 06, 12:22 PM I had my father take in the hinges to work, he used a shop press and pressed them. They are as good as new now. He did over tighten a few of them so they are pretty hard to open/close but I am sure once they are reassembled, with the weight of a hood and what not, they will be flawless.

WillW23 Dec 29th, 06, 6:08 PM Hood Hinges can be repressed and work fine for years if the looseness in the rivet is up and down in the play, but if there is side to side play in the rivet, after it is cleaned and preped, you would need to replace the rivets. I have a 72 Chevelle that i put a Cowl induction hood on, and never could get aligned right, till i replaced the rivets. I made 2 adjustments then, and it shut perfect. I have repaired alot on hinges with new rivets, and you can tell a big difference.

My father and i make them in our shop, on our lathe, out of 1018 steel. We were the ones that just rebuilt the ones for Rich, and pressed them in, then ,powdercoated them for him. Go to www.hoodhingerepair.com for more info!

Thanks Willie, I think I'll need a set for my 69.
jfman Dec 31st, 06, 4:06 AM Is the spring powdercoated as well ?
WillW23 Dec 31st, 06, 10:01 AM yes it is, semi-gloss black powder from Eastwood!
jfman Dec 31st, 06, 8:20 PM yes it is, semi-gloss black powder from Eastwood!
I didnt know powder coat was flexible enought to use one a spring like that..
WillW23 Dec 31st, 06, 8:31 PM alot more fexible than any other paint or coating you can find. I have a special spring device, that I use to spread the spring for the powdercoat process that allows for the inside of the spring to get covered as well. I love powdercoat, and use it on all small parts for my Chevelles, that i can. it is very durable, and resist rusting, and is almost indestructable.

How much are they from GM ?
Hi-po SS 454 Jan 1st, 07, 10:20 AM GM-$144 each without spring from OPG. I'm sure that is without spring
$169.95 ea starting Tues. and springs are in the $20ea area .
Looks like about $400 with shipping
Slick71ss Jan 1st, 07, 11:46 AM How much are they from GM ?
Hinges are $90 each and springs are $10 each.
I got prices fron gmparts direct and then went to my local parts dealer. They matched the price so I didn't have to pay shipping.
Hi-po SS 454 Jan 1st, 07, 12:43 PM That sounds like a Deal. I don't think every GM dealer sells them for that same price.
But actually, a new one compared to a rebuilt one, you won't be able to tell much differents. And the rebuilt have new rivets, No scratches , gouges, and straight as an arrow
The rebuilt ones I bought look BRAND new with powder coat
Your choice !!!

That rebuild is top notch for the price.
I rebuilt my own. I blasted mine clean, heated the rivets (as someone else mentioned previously) then compressed them in my shop press until they were tight. I then sprayed them with black epoxy primer. I built a spring expander out of some scrap wood, 4 exaust u bolts and a couple of ratcheting tie downs to pull them apart. Was able to blast and spray the inside and out of the springs.
Anyways for the time I spent on them, Willie's rebuilds would be worth every cent!
WillW23 Jan 1st, 07, 1:33 PM I agree buying GM Orignals are the way to go anytime, but what my father and i are offering is a lower cost, not making that much money in other words, for car guys like we are. If i were in it for the money i be charging $100.00 apiece. Not twisting anyone's arm to buy my service, just offer it to people who do not buy GM NOS.

Well if it works for Willie, Great !!!! All I care about is that I get a good product. And Willie supplied me with a top notch product that I am really happy with. And to have my Painter to say the same (he installed the hood hinges on my car), when he don't say much, is proof to me.
I'll buy from "Hoodhingerepair" again.
WillW23 Jan 20th, 07, 6:26 PM Thanks for the compliments MYOTRUCK, you still are on the Christmas card list!
