: Information and Pictures BC/CC & SS
feedphillipnow Jun 16th, 04, 4:41 PM Yet again I am seeking photos and stories on BC/CC & Single Stage paint jobs. The only time I painted an entire vehicle it was SS paint. This will be my second paint job and doing it at home. My control isnt really a concern it's setting everything up right and clean. Can someone lay down a quick 'HOW YOU DID IT' like how many coats, between coats, when sanded, what was used, I really would appreciate lots of detail and pictures if anyones got em' I will being priming and painting this month if things go as planned so it's decision time.

Also if you've got a second click my link, maybe some paint ideas and colors :D Eric, If you pop in here let me know about that Chrystler Blue?
Thanks,
Phil
Black70454 Jun 16th, 04, 6:08 PM Sounds like your pretty excited about painting this car. One of the most important things about painting in a garage at home is the air flow, the air flow can effect the way the paint will lay out. The temperature has alot to do with it to. I would use base clear, because you sand imperfections in the base before clearing. Single stage is pretty unforgiving especially in metallics. The advantage of single stage is fast coverage, but I would not use it in a garage. it will stick to everything including you. The main thing is patience and good flash time between coats. These are just some of the basics, I hope this helps some. Good luck.
William Hennke Jun 16th, 04, 11:03 PM Here is some pictures of my 68 SS.I just got done painting it a couple of months ago.Its ppg Viper red base coat clear coat with 3 coats of base and 3 coats of 2021 clear after that I color sanded it and buffed it and then used machine glaze on it.This is the first whole car I have ever painted and I painted it at the shop where I work as an auto tech. The pictures of the new paint job are at the bottom of the pictures list at the top is a picture of what it looked like before.
ToocoolZ28 Jun 17th, 04, 1:28 AM Take a look at the pics in my signature. 4 coats of Single stage PPG then color sanded and buffed afterward. Its VERY smooth and shiney, everyone asks about the paint and how I got so shiney, it looks wet all the time. Painted in my garage.

feedphillipnow Jun 17th, 04, 6:50 AM THANKS guys! all super helpful, i bought my primers and reducers today, i will lay it down within the next week or 2. I dont want it to sit in primer more than it really has to.
Hey Ron thats what I am really interested in seeing is some Single stage jobs. The guys always say BC/CC which is self explainitory on its niceness, but the people who have shot single stage here have nice looking rigs and have had good experiences? Whats color sanding anyways? Probably something Ive done but dont know by name. :D Sorry so confusing its 4am im off to bed. Hope to hear from soon! Thanks again, your all tons of help.
JimD Jun 17th, 04, 10:11 AM Color sanding is wet sanding all the little imperfections out so its perfectly flat--of course after the paint has cured and with very fine paper 1500-2k. Buffing brings the shine up.
Super nice car Toocool!

Early morning job!

feedphillipnow Jun 17th, 04, 3:50 PM Hey Sacto Curt, have we met? :D Yeah I know its been nasty in the daytime lately. And another crapper, our automatic garage door is screwed up, the rollers are all messed up so I can't get into the garage for a while. That will be my excuse while I paint shop the next 2 weeks smile.gif so even if tiny particles or dust gets into the paint, those types of things would wet sand and buff out wouldnt they? I like that single stage paint job though. Whats the price difference on BC/CC Versus Single Stage, PPG?

Super nice car Toocool! I color sanded with 2000 grit wet or dry paper (wet of course) the ENTIRE car with a soft sanding sponge, then buffed with machine POLISHING compound then Meguires no. 83 polishing compound.
Thanks for the compliments.
Zman Jun 18th, 04, 3:07 AM Hey Phillip graemlins/waving.gif
If you choose a solid color, then SS is fine.
You'll save quite a bit of $$ in the cost of the clear, extra hardner, and solvent.
However, if you choose a metallic color, you'll deffinitely want to go the BC/CC route.
Single stage metallics can be a bugger to get to lay out nice, and I would NOT recomend it for a beginner.
As for color sanding, I would not use the soft sponge type pad. It's hard to get even pressure with the soft pads, and you can end up with "finger" marks. Also, the soft blocks tend to kind of "float" over the imperfections you're trying to remove. 3m makes a great color sanding pad. I can't remember the part number, but it's black on one side, and blue on the other with holes in the blue side. The little holes help hold the water, and help keep it from skimming over the surface. You'll get a nicer, straighter job with a semi hard block.
If you've never sanded and buffed a car before, you might find a buddy that has done it, and is willing to teach/help you.
feedphillipnow Jun 18th, 04, 7:55 PM I think I may want to go with single stage now :D I did put alot of work into the body, but its not a show car. And its my second paint job, and im poor. It would probably be alot easier to shoot a single stage in my garage. As long as I dont fall in love with a metallic color versus a solid I will probably be shopping for single stage PPG. Thanks for all the help, anymore info? graemlins/beers.gif IDeas?
sevt_chevelle Jun 18th, 04, 8:57 PM before you order that paint in SS you had better make sure it doesnt include metallic or pearl!!!
Cant think of too many colors out there today without some amount of pearl added.
Baseclear if need be is easier to repair then SS. In my opinion if you are NOT spraying black or red then go with baseclear
