: 2007 Hot Rod Pump Gas Drags
dmg1029 Dec 20th, 06, 2:48 PM Just wondering if anyone is going? I live about 2.5 hours away from Memphis. Been to Memphis drag strip several times. It's really a great track. We'll prepared, plenty of pit room, good run out, etc. Nice folks.
I was 'thinking' about registering.... Any forum members thinking about it?
Thanks.
Ron454 Dec 20th, 06, 5:05 PM It's a nitrous, turbo, blower deal.
Guys who run NA like me, and folks who live thousands of miles away, and can't run low nines high eights just won't be interested.
It's quite simple.
Look at the population density in the east vs the west. No comparrison.
Put one on the west coast, and I'd be interested.
Would be fun to watch though.
BTW....I have heard that the track prep has been poor to dangerous for this event.

adeeos Dec 20th, 06, 11:05 PM David, I competed last year, but broke my rear end at the launch of the qualifying pass. I would suggest going. The tour of Comp Cams was very interesting and you can get an up close look at some really neat cars.
I don't plan on entering again this year, not enough motor, but we are going to watch and have adult beverages
dmg1029 Dec 20th, 06, 11:43 PM Yea, I think it would be fun. My attitude would be to have as much fun as I can and enjoy just being there. I live south of Nashville, so it's not that bad a ride there.
Been to COMP before, but not for a tour, only to pick up parts...
Sounds like you have a nice ride.
Maybe see you in the stands? Early May is usually nice there.
Jesse N. Dec 21st, 06, 3:39 PM I was thinking of entering but it is just too early in the year for me. My engine combo is all new and the local tracks don't open until the end of April so there is really no time to test. Oh well, maybe next year.
gehant2006 Dec 21st, 06, 4:42 PM what is the date of the pump gas drags? thank you Mike

Ever been to a race where guys did NOT complain about the track? I haven't. Best moment of last year, and I think the tv guys caught it, is after the race I was in the pits and one guy walked up and said the track was junk. Two seconds later another guy came and said he'd had the best 60-foot of his life there.
Same story: one guy pulls out because he claims our tire-size rule is too small to be safe. The next guy out puts his car straight on the bumper on the same size tires.
Without controversy it wouldn't be as fun. The PGD test and tune is thursday the 10th, and the Comp day is Saturday the 12th with racing that night.

I have a buddy of mine who competed in the event a few years ago and he said the track sucked as well. He is an experienced racer so I believe him. I have been to many events and when the track is prepped well 99% of the guys there agree. When a track hooks it hooks, when it doesn't it takes a guy with a lot more skill and data to get down it. When the track just plain sucks, it just plain sucks. That being said sometimes the weather will not allow you to properly prep a track; such as if it is too cold.
Frieburger, I am not trying to flame you, but being safe at speed on a small tire and cutting a good 60' on one is two entirely different animals. Have you ever watched the 10.5 W guys race? Those cars are often all over the place and crash a lot more frequently than big tire cars do. You need to take into account a lot of the guys who run the PGD are not experienced racers, just guys who are able to make a lot of power.
Have you ever driven an eight second car? There is a big difference between an eight second car and a 12 sec car, or even a 10 sec car for that matter. When sh!t happens it happens a lot faster.
Freiburger Dec 22nd, 06, 12:25 AM Sorry, I should not have started an argument of anecdotes.

dmg1029 Dec 22nd, 06, 12:59 AM No problem. I was not at last year's PGD, but I have been to Memphis several times and the track was in good shape everytime I was there. I'm sure folks will do the best they can to make things as safe as possible.
My goal is just to have fun. I'm not as serious as most, however I appreciate safety.
This forum, like others, is a great place for everyone to discuss topics such as this.
lemonice Jan 29th, 07, 9:58 PM well i applied, but i dont think i will be picked. they are only picking 75 cars.(FROM THE WHOLE UNITED STATES).but i would like to go just for the fun of it.

I applied also.. I'll let you know if and when I hear. Like you said, it's only 75 cars from US. Even if I don't get picked, I'll still go to watch. It's a blast.
Good luck.
lemonice Jan 29th, 07, 10:33 PM i think they said if you are picked you will be notified by feb 12.
Daygoslow Jan 29th, 07, 11:32 PM being a memphian i have attended the PGD's before (its definately an experience). i met a guy last year with a very nice 70 chevelle that left soo nicely with both wheels roughly 2-3 feet in the air and set them down soooo gently. i must say that as far as track prep goes i have always heard that the track prep is pretty good for any type event we have here. the track prep that they give us po folks on thursday night test-n-tunes sometimes leaves something to be desired. from what i can tell track prep is never bad for people that run roughly mid 10's and slower but for the guys that are REALLY movin its not always that great and those are the guys that really need it.

Have you ever driven an eight second car? There is a big difference between an eight second car and a 12 sec car, or even a 10 sec car for that matter. When sh!t happens it happens a lot faster. There is even quite a bit of difference in two different eight second cars. My son changed over from a 540" BB which had run 8.63 @ 159.6 to a new 598" BB which has run 8.23 @ 168.70. It's like night and day trying to get the big motor down the track. This bigger motor has to be softened up in order to get it moving without standing the car on the back bumper and out at about 500' feet where the 540 simply went straight down broadway the 598" starts spinning the tires and walking all over the place. While a track might seem O.K. to one car because the torque and weight match the conditions, another might be wondering if he's going to be alive tomorrow. The shootout cars at our track are undoubtably going to get quicker and faster this coming season and the promotors have dropped the weight in order to attract more cars. One of the top runners has already gone 8.08 @ 170 in testing before the weather got bad.
lemonice Jan 30th, 07, 2:03 PM so in reality, this gas pump drags is about 7,8,9 second cars. that they are portraying as (street) cars. because if they can make the 30 mile cruise then they must be (street) cars. so now i am getting the feeling that if you have a 10 or 11 second car you might as well stay home and save your money for for thst big holley you wanted. well my car only runs 11:40s so i dont think i will have to worry about getting picked. if anybody gets picked that has a car that runs slower than 11:00, please chime in and let us all know.
eric13617 Jan 31st, 07, 12:45 AM Anyone ever seen Tom Lynchs' Moostang? It runs a twin turboed 449,that runs 4.40's at 169 in the eighth mile, with the wheels in the air the whole way ,on a 10.5.Definately not a PGD car but a fast one none the less.Video is at http--videos.streetfire.com.video 2.
