: Torque convertor recommendation
SMilligan Dec 18th, 06, 9:51 PM Would appreciate some input here guys. Am building a 454 .040 over, roller cam deal. We estimate 500-550 HP, turbo 400 with shift kit, 3.08 rear (open, soon to be an eaton posi) 17" wheels.
I am getting conflicting info on HP capacities on some units, I am thinking a 2500 or so stall. Won't be racing just loking for a little more off the line. Anybody have a favorite?
chevfan_1 Dec 19th, 06, 12:18 AM I've used the good b&m's,tci's and want to try an art carr the next time.Hughes are suppose to be good also but dont know for sure.Whatever you do DONT buy a Superior Torque Converters reman unit, they are JUNK and will never stall where they say they are suppose to.Like a 3500 that stalls at over 5000 or a 2500 that stalls at 1400.Seen them do it to more people than I can remember.

Give these guys a try. They're in PA and are very good. I've used their stuff since 1980 and never a problem. Their prices aren't too bad and their converters are top notch. They offer 1 free restall, also.

Whiskey Dec 19th, 06, 3:36 PM I would go with the Art Carr! If you can afford it. They are very pricey but after running about all of them it is the only converter I have ever used that didnt feel like the trans was burnt up at low rpms. It feels pretty tight driving around town and stalls to 3500 (the advertised stall) Only if you fully load it. Like nail it at a light.
mr 4 speed Dec 19th, 06, 8:01 PM I reccomend the B&M 2400 Holeshot.Works well with my combo (and its not a racecar,it just happens to be a street car that I know what it ET's at)
I have also used it behind a stock 454 and the same motor upgraded with a mild cam.
Great street convertor with no excessive slippage.
Skier_Bob Dec 19th, 06, 8:45 PM ckperformanceTH400 w/ 2500 stall works well with my 496 stroker (C&D Performance) 4.10 Rear, Gearvendor O/D.

Have an extra 9" one if you need it.
Thanks,

70ElkySS Dec 20th, 06, 8:48 AM After several recommendations on this forum (including jakeshoe), I contacted the folks at PTC for a torque converter. They recommended their 12" model that stalls around 2200-2400, is beefed-up to take the torque, and best of all cheap! ($140+shipping). This is behind a ZZ502, which spec's out close to your 454, and with a 3.08 rear.

b-man Dec 21st, 06, 9:41 AM Please remember; you get what you pay for..........
Sometimes a deal...... and the word substandard product.... can be tied together.
Do your homework.
* No fun changing out a converter either.... do it once. Do it right.
