: What's wrong with this picture? (1969 fender)
Mr69 Dec 18th, 06, 9:53 AM You'd have some work ahead of you if you bought this fender with the intention of using it on a car. Anyone know why?

luv70's Dec 18th, 06, 10:07 AM Being from Florida I can attest to the problem, Surface Rust and Pitting.
68bye Dec 18th, 06, 10:11 AM Well to start, that's more than surface rust. That's pretty heavy. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting paint on that until ALL the rust was gone, and trying to get around the where the headlight goes will definately be fun. The way you asked that question makes it seem like you know something else about the fender though.
Another thing, for $275, I'll buy one that's e-coated. Who cares if I have to take a minute to fix the curve by the door edge.

Oh yes, there is something very wrong.
It's not the rust. Actually the rust is ok. It will blast right off.
Look a little closer.
ed3196499 Dec 18th, 06, 10:27 AM its missing the inside part of the fender that bolts to the firewall and the wheel well
67shovel Dec 18th, 06, 10:28 AM Looks to be missing the flange to bolt it on under the hood
GottaCruise Dec 18th, 06, 11:48 AM They forgot to market it as an SS fender! Is there a hole where the grille extension goes?
Andy69 Dec 18th, 06, 12:01 PM It's missing some pieces
Cameano Dec 18th, 06, 12:01 PM Nevermind. :D
OutCast Dec 18th, 06, 6:18 PM The suspense is killing me.
C'mon Nate, I have to know !!

quikss Dec 18th, 06, 6:30 PM I was going to say if you aren't planning on using a hood you'd be OK, but I guess you can't even bolt it to the cowl the way it is!!
I feel sorry for the schmuck that buys these and doesn't realize it:sad:

Some of the new GM fenders are sold this way. Apparently they are just running out of that particular piece. It's ok, they seldom get too rusty, so anyone can just take one off their old fender. If you don't know this going in though you might get kinda miffed :)
Neal Wright Dec 18th, 06, 7:36 PM Alright, so when did factory fenders come without e-coat? I say it's a Sherman panel, that sat outside for about a yr.
I'd probably give it like a 2005 vintage ... when they starting shorting the hood hinge reinforcement.
Is it me, or for some reason the side marker light looks way off ... but I haven't pulled my fenders out in a while either.

Old, fat, bald guy Dec 18th, 06, 8:14 PM The seller isn't hiding anything, it says "RAW" and Raw stock is stuff that is not fully assembled or e-coated, made it somewhat down the manufacturing line, just not all the way
Neal Wright Dec 18th, 06, 8:42 PM Did I miss you kidding, or are you trying to be serious?

The only panels that might have made it out of the factory without e-coat, would be 5-finger discounts.
Here's an example for ya ... I work a Tier 1 Honda right now, and we paint all their service quarter panels. There is a very exact log of the panels Honda supplies us, what we paint, what we scrap etc ... and no discrepancies allowed. Scrap pieces are literally smashed.
Anyhow ... my call, definitely NOT a GM panel.
Keith Tedford Dec 18th, 06, 11:30 PM Back in the old days, GM wasn't so fussy. I saw stuff scrapped just the way it came off the press. There would be something wrong with the parts but some could certainly have been saved with a little work. These are missing a lot of stuff and probably are newer parts that have been scrapped then pulled out of the bins and saved. I'd pass.

nope, not joking...... but it wouldn't have made it to the dealer level, it would have been scrapped and salvaged or "5 fingered", but remember, this is a 37 year old fender. the last time GM probably stamped one (or had it stamped) was 20 - 25 years ago..... alot of quality and theft reduction implements installed since then
Mr69 Dec 21st, 06, 7:40 AM Most likely salvaged by someone who worked for the company or close by or the scrap guy himself.
It's surprising what some people will save because they think it has some value.
Odds are they all have something wrong with them that kept them from completing the assembly process. They should be scrapped.
D Stroud Dec 21st, 06, 4:55 PM There was an Ebay add floating around here a couple of days ago that had a bunch of those fenders stacked up against the wall. Seems like the whole lot went for $1280 or so.
I wonder if someone bought the whole lot of em thinking they could make a killer deal by selling them individually.
They probably didn't realize the were incomplete.

I asked how does the hood hinges bolt up, bet I don't get an answer. :D
BADCHVL Feb 1st, 07, 10:39 AM I remember seeing those fenders on ebay sometimes during the middle of the year in 2006. If i remember correctly everyone was asking how to attach the fenders to the car. I don't think they ever got an answer.
