I had thought about doing something like that years ago. My first 4 cars were '80 & '81 Mustangs. 3 of them were 2.3L 4 cylinders. The cams had pipe plugs in both ends. It looked like an easy way to make a lamp using the cam gear as a base.

I can't imagine paying that much for a lamp. The most expensive part of that thing is the chroming.

I think it would depend on whether it's forged or cast! :D

Now whose wife is going to let them put that lamp in the living room? I mean...we wouldn't have to ask, but it would be nice of us to ask the wife right?

How many of you want a 50 pound cast iron lamp on a table for the kids to knock over on themselves? Pretty cool anyway.

I don't think it's an infringement on a patent, pending or not, to make one for yourself. Patents protect to an exacting degree. Change someone's design by 10%, and you're not infringing on it, you can patent "your" design too. FWIW, Joe, I know a guy with a patent for a two-handed throttle setup. He suffers from arthritis, and when he asked around about it, he got laughed at a lot. So he made it himself, and patented it before unveiling it. It holds good for ten years. He can use the clutch and throttle at the same time with the left hand, because pulling on the clutch lever naturally rolls the throttle position back to idle. Of course, his design uses only a single cable to the carb, but it WAS assembled using stock parts. I'm sure you can figure out what he did. ;)

BTW, lamps. I hope they're making them from unuseable cores.

Yep, your friend has a utility patent on his throttle invention.

This guy could only have a design patent on it. And I doubt it would hold up very well in court.

I have a strange feeling that the guys brother or something has a machine shop and was tired of throwing them away. If you'll excuse the pun, one of them had a light bulb go off and they started making lamps out of them.
