: How much is this car worth?
Bulldog68 Dec 14th, 06, 10:57 PM Hey guys,
I'm trying to establish a value for my brother's car in its current form. I'm usually up on the values of these cars, but have been more into camaros, as I own a 68 Camaro. Perhaps you guys can come up with a ballpark range of what it would cost to buy this car IF it were for sale (it's not, but a brother-to-brother exchange may occur in the near future :D . I want to be fair to the little bro' if that occurs!). Here it is...
- 1970 Chevelle Malibu coupe
- Originally 307 V8 w/TH350 trans and 10-bolt, now 350 V8
- Current engine is a few years old with low miles. It's not an era-correct block, but was built to 300-350 hp - a decent cruiser. Has Edelbrock intake and carb, Hedman coated headers, and a full dual exhaust system with Flowmasters.
- Originally Medium Green paint, now has a cheap Miracle paint job - silver
- Original chrome bumpers, trim, moldings in great shape
- California car previously owned by old lady (believed to be orig owner or 2nd owner)
- No history of accidents, no evidence of collision damage whatsoever
- Body is straight with all-original panels
- No detectable rust on body, interior, trunk or undercarriage. Everything is solid, dry, and clean (I know, even California cars are supposed to have SOME rust or undercarriage dents... surprisingly I looked, couldn't find).
- Interior is original dark green with a bench seat - the headliner, front seat covers, dash pad, and some other pieces need replacement, but it's all there.
- Suspension is stock w/KYBs, brakes are manual drum, has power steering
- Car runs good and is a solid driver. No drivetrain or electrical issues.
Overall, it's a very clean car that needs a real paint job, a new interior, and some suspension/brake upgrades to be outstanding. I can't think of anything else, but if I'm leaving any important info out, let me know.
Thanks for your help!
Ron
(p.s. I would attach photos, but apparently it's not an option for this posting. If desired, I can email some to those who are curious)
1972Custom Dec 15th, 06, 12:29 AM i do not know, but ut sound like you do. i would think $4,500, but others will tell you $10,000. this car seems to have no options anyone would pay big money for. it sounds real clean, and i love the pics(lol). the reason no one has answered is becouse you can tell me all day long what it looks like, but everyone whants to see.

Bulldog68 Dec 15th, 06, 2:31 AM You've got a point... why look at a post unless there are pretty pictures, right? Ok, here are links to the photos I have... hope this helps.

anychevy Dec 15th, 06, 3:08 AM perfect car for an ss clone, he won't have any problem selling it if he's realistic, somewhere from 5 to 7k I guess ? if the body is real nice.
dave
Chris R Dec 15th, 06, 3:29 AM I would say around 7K easily. Nice car.
rubadub Dec 15th, 06, 5:30 AM $8500 up to $12000, if the body is as nice as you say, maybe a little more. Its hard to even find a car that nice.
Rob
anychevy Dec 15th, 06, 6:42 AM considering it needs a full repaint, full interior, wheels, has manual drum brakes, small block T350 & 10 bolt etc. 12k is a little optomistic ! good body chrome and stainless is all good, but does he want a quick sale or can he wait for the right guy ? could take till spring to get 10k JMO

Junkyard Dawg Dec 15th, 06, 6:56 AM If it's what you say it is $6k sounds reasonable.
Does the club come with it? :p
Too bad I'm not in Cali, I wouldn't mind another Chevelle to my collection.
Bulldog68 Dec 15th, 06, 9:55 AM Thanks for the responses, guys! Wow, talk about a wide range of values - roughly $5000-10000 from what I gather. I guess each car is only worth what someone will pay for it, so there's no way of knowing for sure until it's for sale.
As it stands, my brother just graduated college and moved out of state, so he's kicking around the idea of selling the Chevelle. He's in Oregon and it's here in California not being driven. Since he's kinda lost interest in it, he realizes selling it could help living expenses and other priorities. I'm kinda bummed that he doesn't try harder to keep it, but that's his perogative. Maybe he'll get back into cars later in life.
Anyway, I'd like to keep the car in the family, and I have a 68 Camaro that would love a new garage mate! If/when my brother decides to sell, I'll use this info to help come up with a fair price. From the looks of things, this could get expensive for me and very profitable for him! Looking forward to posting an update if I get a new car in the garage...
Thanks again,
Ron
MrBill66Malibu Dec 16th, 06, 8:47 AM Ron,
Convince him to sell it to you for $5000. It's a good deal for both of you if you can both afford it. This way when he does regret selling it (and he will) it's still in the family and you can work something out with him to buy it back! Don't let this one slip away, you too will regret it.
Bill
smittyocat Dec 16th, 06, 12:58 PM I would agree 5k is a reasonable price. One of these days we have to start drawing the line somewhere and refusing to pay inflated prices may be the key to bringing the price of an average Chevelle within the grasp of the average hobbyist. Just my opinion.

I couldn't agree with you more !!!!!!! Ditto !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
rubadub Dec 16th, 06, 2:41 PM Theres a couple of things wrong with this picture, and I don't mean the car pictures.

Bulldog68 Dec 16th, 06, 9:22 PM Rob, what do you mean?
camarofreak Dec 17th, 06, 12:07 AM well just an example i bought this 71 malibu 307 AZ car 2 years ago with all original panels no rust a 350 4 bolt main running with fresh paint and new interior for 4800 minus the wheels and tires shown it had plain jane ralley`s on it. So i would say around 5 is a safe number they are still around and in the shape you described people just tend to jump on the first pile they see for 5000!! i looked at about 25 other cars before buying this one!

Stock72ElCamino Dec 17th, 06, 12:57 PM Tell him you'll give him 5000 for it and let him drive it whenever he wants.
Bulldog68 Dec 17th, 06, 9:20 PM Camarofreak, it looks like you got a pretty good deal on your 71. Guess the patience paid off!
As for my situation, it's sounding like around $5000 is the consensus for a fair, current price that would benefit my brother and I. I'm still waiting to hear from him about his decision to sell, but will see him on Christmas, so I should know by then. I'll keep everyone posted... thanks to everyone for chiming in with their input!
Ron
BIGBLOCK70Z Dec 18th, 06, 3:12 PM I you want the car take 5000.00 in cash to your christmas gathering and hand it to him tell him it is the most you can pay, and he is the best brother a man could ever have. when he opens it he will just flip, when he see's all those hundreds. and dont give him 10's good luck:beers:
Blown 70 Dec 18th, 06, 4:22 PM Thanks for the responses, guys! Wow, talk about a wide range of values - roughly $5000-10000 from what I gather. I guess each car is only worth what someone will pay for it, so there's no way of knowing for sure until it's for sale.
The reason for the range is:
A picture is worth a thousand words,
But, seeing it in person is priceless.
Pictures can be very decieving both ways. Some make a Piece of cr@p look like a master piece, and sometimes a nice car can look bad.
Judging from the pictures and description I think it should be worth $4k - $6k
Whatever you offer him, let him know I'll top it by $500
camarofreak Dec 18th, 06, 10:37 PM Hey Bulldog, I have found that to many people watch barret jackson and think that bondo wagon malibu in their back yard is worth 30 grand!! so people think a rusted pile must be worth at least 8000?? i have found many clean decsent cars for a fair price like i said you just have to wait for them and it looks like your bro has one!! 5-6 is very fair for you both as that car looks almost exactly like mine when i bought it!
P.S. love those 68 camaros wouldnt mined havin another one myself!!
Bulldog68 Dec 19th, 06, 7:32 AM I am gonna offer $5k and see what he thinks. If all goes well, I will be giving myself the best Christmas gift ever. And hopefully posting an after-Christmas thread including a picture of my garage with Chevelle and Camaro side by side. Ahhhh, what a pretty sight it will be!
Wanna know the best part about it? The girlfriend actually approves with the purchase wholeheartedly, so long as I paint it RED! And that works for me, since I love red chevelles. Now to the next question... black or white stripes? Just kidding. Happy holidays guys :beers:
