: 396 to 477 ci"
exhumed Dec 14th, 06, 6:33 PM I just purchased a 68 chevelle and after speaking with a previos owner,(not the owner i got the car from).I was told that it's a 396 block stroked to a 477.
can someone tellme what stroke and bore needs to be done to achive this.I might have got a great car for a steal!!! Thanks .
BillsCamino Dec 14th, 06, 6:38 PM I think a 4.350" bore with a 4" stroke will get you close to 477...basically a .100" over 454
I'm building a 70 402 to go back in a Chevelle. 4.25 stroke 4.185 bore (.060 402) makes 470ci
Junkyard Dawg Dec 15th, 06, 5:59 AM Hhhmm....odd combo....you sure this guy isn't just jerkin your chain?
animal69 Dec 15th, 06, 8:25 AM With a 4.125 bore it would take a stroke of 4.464 to reach 477 cubic inch. Not very workable.
exhumed Dec 15th, 06, 10:43 AM I don't think he's yanking my chain.I did not buy it from the guy who told me what motor was in it so he has nothing to loose.matter a fact they painted small 477 cid on the side of the cowl hood.
I was told by a friend that if i had an old 1965/66 396 block that could handle ialot of bore it could have a 454 crank set up and a bore of .080 or something.
animal69 Dec 15th, 06, 12:21 PM 396 overbored .080 with a 4" stroke is only 437 cu.in.! That's a long ways from 477.
GRN69CHV Dec 15th, 06, 5:53 PM Good luck. I looked into doing a 402 .03 motor with a 4.25" stroke. No one has pistons for it. Best deal I have seen is a 4" crank with KB off the shelf pistons. 4.155 bore = 434CI, 4.185 bore = 440CI.
exhumed Dec 15th, 06, 8:28 PM I got confirmation that it is a 1966 block. Then I called the the guy (2 onwers ago who built the motor and he sais it was not a 4" storke.he could not remember what he used either 4.125 or 4.250 and he did say pistons were hard to find but he did get them.Maker again not know.he did say they were 10.5 to 1 forged.
so what would it take to make a 477 using a 396 block?
BillsCamino Dec 15th, 06, 9:35 PM so what would it take to make a 477 using a 396 block?
A freakin' miracle! ;) :noway:
Ain't gonna happen...not enough meat in them bores to go big enough. You'd have to bore to 4.225" AND then swing a 4.25" crank.
Have you checked the casting number on the block to verify that it is actually a 396 block?
animal69 Dec 15th, 06, 10:34 PM If you got a good block that'll take a .100 overbore, you still need to swing a 4 5/16 crank.
Hey GRN69CHV. I had Probe Racing build my pistons 4.185 bore,4.25 stroke, 6.385 rods,1.285 c/h forged flatops 9.0 Comp w/110cc heads.
GRN69CHV Dec 16th, 06, 5:58 AM bbm, thanks for the info. Just curious, how does it run? Did you have to do alot of clearancing to swing the crank?
exhumed Dec 16th, 06, 9:59 AM Hmmm, this is weird to say the least! Why would a guy who did not sell me the car tell me it has a 477 motor?does not make sense.
Junkyard Dawg Dec 16th, 06, 10:14 AM Could've "thought" it was a 477, not realizing it was really only a 402?
Or could've been "told" it was a 477 and went off of that?
Hard to say what it really is unless you actually know the bore and stroke. What's the casti9ng numbers off the block?
forcd ind Dec 16th, 06, 12:09 PM i would think it could be done-i bought what was supposed to be a 427, turned out to be a 396 bored out to a 427 bore(396/427, same stroke-427/454 same bore) if you added a 454 crank it would be a 454, if you added a 4.250 crank, same bore, it would be up there
and yes, the motor ran pretty hot
prob. would take a lot of clearancing-only way to tell is rem. a head, ck bore & stroke
smittyocat Dec 16th, 06, 12:29 PM maybe its a 472 cady motor bored .030 LOL jk :p
GRN69CHV: I don't have it running yet. It's going to take some clearancing but doesn't look like it will be too bad.I linehoned it this morning,I'm going to hone the cyl's Monday so the pistons will fit into the bores so I can mock it up and mark where I need to do my clearancing. I'll let you know.

Interesting 4.25 crank in a 402 .keep us posted maybe I should consider that when I redo my numbers matching 396 early 961 block I know a 4' crank will go in with little or no clearancing looking to build a low rpm street motor with stock steel heads / intake etc etc
exhumed Dec 16th, 06, 9:30 PM I'll get the block #'s.The guy I did buy it from told me he checked the # and it was a 1966 396 block.
he did not know it was supposed to be a 477 until I told him that I spoke with another previous owner.
And again, there is 477 painted on side side of the cowl hood. Why would you waste your time on a nice resto to put some weird numbers if that's not whats in the car.
I might never know,i'm not taking it apart anytime soon.
can someone crunch some numbers together to see IF it is a 477 what the exact stroke and bore would have to be .
8sec71 Dec 16th, 06, 10:33 PM Well a 4.225 bore with a 4.250 stroke gives you 476.67 ci...
BillsCamino Dec 16th, 06, 10:40 PM You'd have to bore to 4.225" AND then swing a 4.25" crank.

Thanks for checking my math!

Sorry missed your post.:(
exhumed Dec 17th, 06, 6:49 PM Ok thanks,if i ever find out what the real deal is with my motor i'll re-post.Thanks to all!
GRN69CHV and CDN SS. Stroker 402-469 finally ready to assemble,Balanced it,polished and cleaned the crank tonight, block is on the stand cleaned and bagged, will be an assembled engine tomorrow unless it's sunny out and my snowmobile makes me exercise it.
triumph66 Jan 20th, 07, 3:06 AM Is this the 1968 Chevelle that was on Ebay... 1968 w/ huge cowl hood w/ 477 painted on the induction scoop??? It was in New Market, MD??
I was wondering how in the world they came up with a 477??
Here is a link with the details of the car:

This same guy has a sharp looking 69 SS clone for sale on ebay too:

He has listed the 1969 4-5 times with no takers. Although it is a good looking car... he wants more money for it than I am willing to pay. His reserve was over $22K
Either way... if that is your 1968, It looked like a nice unique car. Congratulations!! I hope that you enjoy it!!
Welcome to TeamChevelle!!
