: How do you remove vinyl top adhesive?

I'm removing the vinyl top on my '67. How do I get rid of the glue? It seems too "sticky" to sand. Is there a common solvent that will take it off? Acetone?

Thanks!

Mike

I've only done it once, and I tried every type of cleaner I could get my hands on. It was a long time ago, but I think I ended up using a sharp chisel for most of it - a very slow and nerve-wracking process.

MEK is available at you local Home Depo in the paint section. You'll have that glue off in seconds.

hey guys, i dont know if that vinyl adhesive is the sames tuff i used but i got the same question. ij ust put some weatherstripping on with U-418 adesive, a thick black glue. Will the MEK get this off as well without ruining the paint??

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks,
Matt It will remove the adhesive. You will probably want to test it in an inconspicuous area before using it on paint. I have used it on painted surfaces without any trouble. But better safe than sorry.

And while we're on the subject of MEK, safety should be your first area of concern before ever opening the can. Here's a site that gives some info.

Hey guys,
Used to use MEK when I was bending wrenches on Cobra helicopters for Uncle Sam. This stuff WILL REMOVE THE SKIN FROM YOUR BODY VERY FAST. It is so toxic even the US Army trys not to use it anymore. When we do, we are supposed to use full body suits with postive pressure respirators. I haven't seen a can of MEK in about 8 years. USE the material safety data sheets. I wished I had before MEK rotted my brain.

I think the MEK they sell at Home Depot is diluted, as it does not seem as powerful as the stuff I used to use when I was working in the metal fabrication industry. When I use it, I wear gloves and use my shop fan to ventilate the fumes away from me. I think its one thing to remove a little adhesive and another when cleaning with it on a regular basis.

BTW: Sorry about your rotted brain. I think my brain is a little rotted too. Don't know if I can blame the MEK though.

I love this hobby but I hate all the chemicals involved, spoken from my Industrial Environmental Science background to many known carcinogens. Methylethylketone, Isobutanol, Benzene, Toluene all are classified as F005 Hazardous waste solvents if the proper percentage is utilized. Your chromosomes can only take so much before they start mutating and going free radical(cancerous) Anyway I digress, the best over-the- counter solvent I use is "Chem-Tool B12" it has Toluene in it and will just about disolve any known adhesive on contact, just try not to get any on your skin.
