View Full Version : How to swap out cigar lighter knob?

I'm trying to replace just the knob on my cigar lighter. I have the original, but it's all crusted out. I bought a new socket (that works fine) and a new element that comes minus the knob.

Question now is how to remove that knob without breaking it. I suppose the plastic in it is brittle by now (like everything else on the car). Does anyone know the correct technique for coaxing it off and back on the new one?

I've done a site search and haven't seen this question yet. I've done an internet search and turned up nothing. Maybe it's obvious to everyone else but me. :(

Don't know what to tell ya, they just screw together. I don't know of any product that softens plastic without melting it. try spraying a little WD in between the element and the knob?

I bought a new one a year ago and it came with the new knob. I believe I bought it from Lutty's, Thet sell on the net but I'm sure it is not a part exclusive to them. Also you may want to consider replacing it but leaving the power wire off as they are known to get hot enough to melt the dash. I'm talking a plastic dash bezel here. I was replacing the dash bezel at the time and my old bezel was melted around the old lighter.

Thanks for all the great tips. I've found the entire assembly in a few places, but was hoping it was something I could pick up at a local store. Unfortunately, the rochester style lighter is hard to find.
