This is my first post on this forum, and I just wanted to say thanks in advance for all of the knowledge and advice available here. I have a very nice completely stock and original 1969 nomad that I inherited from my great grandfather. It's nice, but tired. I was thinking I might like to modern it up a little by making it a "SS" nomad with Bucket seats, console, and 396. Now for my "whats it worth" question. A buddy has a 100% complete virgin 272 casting 396 motor he is willing to sell me. When I say complete I mean it has brackets, carb, water pump, etc....He's asking $1600.00. Is this high, low, or right on for a motor like this. I'm not trying to fake a numbers matching car, it's purely coincidental that this happens to be a 272 casting. So, does anyone have an opinion of the value of this motor.
Thanks.

How many miles are on the engine?
Is it a turn key engine?

Mileage unknown, but it has never been re-built. I wouldn't consider it a turn key engine. It's been sitting in a garage since the late 80's. Thanks

It probably needs going thru. With that said I'd offer $300-$500.

Unless it's a 4 bolt main block, I think the price is a little high. With all the accessory parts it's probably worth about $1000. Since it has been sitting for so long, it may be seized of have internal damage.

There is usually a reason a 396 would be sitting in someone's garage for so long. Chances are something happened to it and that is why it was pulled out and placed in a garage to sit.
Make a deal with him that will let you take it to an engine builder to check over. If it is rebuildable without major work it is one price. If it needs serious work done to make it operational it is another price.

Great suggestions, I appreciate the advice. I think the fact that it's a "396" has put dollar signs in his eyes.
Thanks,

FWIW I paid $600 for mine and it was a certified crack free block in need of the final machine work and then assemble....came with heads, intake, crank, rods, oil pan....
396 is not an engine many mess with anymore when 454's are more abundant.....
