Well...I finally went and saw car this morning before work. As stated in my Part 2 post, I was going to (had) business cloths on so I couldn't climb around it too much, just wanted to get a sense of the ride.
It is as stated!....it's a real SS, held the actual build sheet and matched it up to cowl and VIN. Overall, very, very nice looking car....recently repainted and a very good job. Perfect, no.....but clearly a one footer. Underside of the car is extremely clean, and appears from what I could see all original sheet metal! He swore the car had been repainted because the original color was red as he pointed it out to me. I had to explain to him that was the primer from the original car as I pointed out the same “red “ paint way up on the inside the fender as you peak in form the door side. I know I should have kept my mouth shut…but I couldn’t. Must have come from down south...it didn't even appear to be undercoated.
As for the hood pin issue, nothing at all seems fishy. It’s a cowl induction hood with no hood pin holes. (I know that’s impossible) Looked around the front for signs of an accident and there are none …or welded up holes in the hood. Fired up the car and the flapper worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, from the engine pad it's not numbers matching... it’s a CXU engine, with the wrong VIN. Still to be seen about the transmission and rear end. From which I researched, it’s a 1974 454/235 hp setup. Nothing better sounding at 7:00 am in the morning that a BB just waking up! :noway:
Engine bay is very clean, he recently also installed a serpentine belt system that was not in the original pic’s. Interior is clean and everything works, not rips or tears. He etched/stenciled in some writing on the rear window about the old day TV character, “The Hulk”, …I guess his kids really likes the Hulk…so that would have to go, no biggee to replace.
So it sounds great right??....well, I don’t want to buy it.:( My heart is really set on a 70 396 (402) with a 4 speed. I know if I bought it I wouldn’t be happy in the end. The thought of cutting through the floor to drop in a four speed is unsettling to me. If a clone, sure…I did it with my first ride….but I don’t have the heart with a “real” one.
I could buy it and flip it….but I don’t want to take the risk….I know “you’ll make your money back” but I am a conservative slob…don’t like to gamble. However, my gut feeling says this car is worth some significant coin and I am passing up a great deal like a dope.
How do consignor’s work? If I could be the middle man…person commits to buy it off of me for say $26k, I commit to purchase from seller at $21k…a $5k net? Sounds way too simple.
My head hurts.
