i got the velle running decent a couple of weeks ago......it had almost 2 year old gas in it and a nasty holley carb. i drained all the gas out and rebuilt the carb and now i'm having more problems than before!

it starts up and rev's way up (don't know the specific rpm my tach isn't hooked up). then when you hit the throttle it dies back down but acts like it's missing real bad. i can't get it to idle and you have to stay in the throttle to keep it running (still runs like crap). after about 20-25 second's it will cut out and the primaries will catch on fire (have to close the choke to get it to stop). what in the world is going on here?

some info about the setup if needed-
350 ci
holley 600 cfm carb vacuum secondary
edelbrock performer intake
dynomax headers
stock points ignition

can anyone help me out? TIA

btw the float bowls are at the right level and i started with the idle mixture screws 1 1/4 turns out.

If it was running ok before you rebuilt the carb that's likely the problem. They make power valve protection kits for older Holleys (I think Holley has been putting them in at the factory for about the last 12 years). What is your timing set at? Too little advance will cause your ptoblems also.

Definitely sounds like something sticking in the carb. Pull the carb apart again and clean it. It could be gummed up again. Make sure you clean everything real well. You could also borrow a carb to make sure that's the problem.

thanks for the replys. i will try swapping on a different carb and double check timing. thanks again!

I took a free "Piece of Junk" Holley apart and found the power valve gasket had dropped down out of place as it was tightened. New gasket and it worked perfectly.

ok update time!!

i checked the plug wires and ignition stuff to make sure that it was getting a good spark and that was all good to go. then i turned the idle mixture screws all the way in and went back out in half turn increments......still getting fuel from somewhere, even when the screws are all the way in. i checked my oil and it REEKED of gasolina.

someone suggested i might have put the wrong gasket on the metering plate and uncovered a hole somewhere. i will try putting a different gasket in and see what that does for me.

thanks for all the suggestions!

yeah im getting the same problem and my setup is almost exaclty to yours. it starts up and revs high, like id say 1.5 to 2 rpm. then ill give it some gas and it ill die down a bit but still rev high... and it too is a holley 600cfm. what ever you find out let me know ! thanks
