All,
Does anyone know if a 327 block cracked from a freeze be welded? It is cracked on both sides on the outside above the pan rail about 4" long.
Thanks,
Stan

it can be done, but is it worth it, that's the question. Is this some irreplaceable date coded Corvette deal? If not, probably better to find another. If you really want to repair it I'd look for a machine shop that is familiar with this stuff:

"familiar" in this case means they will probably have the stuff in stock and think it's not a big deal.

Stan,
Have you looked in the lifter valley area ? They usually crack there at the same time depending on how much water was in the block :(

You could also find a professional welder that does cast iron, but I think its only worth it if its a small journal or something rare.

All,
Thanks for the replies, It is a special block as it's the original 300HP 327 in my 65 El camino. Well I guess I'll check into the cost of having it fixed. Until then I guess the hunt is on for the elusive correctly date and suffix coded block.

The beat way to repair a cast iron block is to have it pinned, not welded. I just had a 402 done and it is holding well. Most competent machine shops will do this and then pressure check to be sure all is well.
