guys,
i want to repaint my mag wheels before i get some new rubber. i have peeled off the tires, valves and weights. my buddy is sand blasting them and they look AWESOME.

what should i do next???
primer???
sanding???
painting???
coats???

i will be getting the mag wheel paint from OPG for the silver and gray portions plus the masking kit.

i would like to have a professional look as well as it lasting a long time.

any help would be much appreciated.

I just finished my wheels for my 72 ss they are the stock 5 spoke rally. I sandblasted them, cleaned and prepped them then used self etching primer and put 2 good coats of eastwoods charcoal grey wheel paint. I lightly wetsanded them let the sit for a day and then applied about 3 coats of clear and they turned out very nice. The only problem I had was getting a can of paint from a different lot that didn't quite match. This was my first time with painting but they did turn out really nice.

thanks brk65,

couple questions (sorry this is all new to me)

1.) clean and prep - what did you use and how did you do it?

2.) self etching primer - what is this? just typical primer in a can? something special?

3.) wet sand - is there a specific grit to use? is skotch-bite acceptable?

4.) what kind of clear coat did you use? mfg? certain amount of gloss?

any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks

you can get all this stuff from NAPA or any other parts store.
After sand blasting I just used a scotch brite pad to knock down any rough spots then cleaned with final wash and let dry. (probably don't even need to do this but I did)
the wheels are really ready after sandblasting just make sure to blow them off good to get rid of any sand residue.
get 2 cans of self etching primer just ask them for it. I think it was $7.00 a can.
I applied the primer and let dry and then applied a couple coats of eastwoods rally wheel paint. This is good paint and comes in a spray can. I would order at least 3 cans. It took me about 2 and a half cans. I then used 3m ultra fine 600 wet dry sand paper and lightly wet sanded them. Then wiped them down good and then applied the clear coats. The wheel paint I used was acrylic lacquer so I used an acrylic lacquer clear coat. I am not sure of the gloss of it. Like I said before this is the first time I have done this but they did turn out very nice. If you would like I could e-mail you some pictures

If original color is noot a concern, I think this stuff would do any wheel a world of good- http://www.alsacorp.com/products/mirrachrome/mirra_show.htm

That stuff looks nice. The picks look real close to chrome but $350 a quart.
