Came across this today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIN_etching and was curious as to how effective it is to etch the vin into the windows of the vehicle?

Just my .02, If your talking about antitheft or authenticity, the windows are about the easiest thing on the car to replace. Also not hard to find. Seems like every rusted hulk out there has decent glass. Wouldn't even need a repaint.

Yeah, but if it's etched in an inconspicuous place, that you, and only you know about, you have a good chance of it not getting noticed. Granted that once you start telling people to look for the VIN on the glass if they see a such and such looking chevelle, the thief may get wind and replace it.... it's still better than nothing.

I have the vin etching on my 65 GTO, on all windows. It was put on free by the local police department. The State of Arizona also has a program called Watch Your Car
see www.azwatchyourcar.com if your car is out on the streets between 1 and 5 a.m. the police will pull it over to be checked and also if they spot the car near the border anytime it will be pulled over and checked. When I finish my 71 Chevelle I will have it vin etched too.

Just another weak effort to detur cloning IMO.

You can buy the etching paste at a local art supply place or Blick art materials. Saw it there last week, and that was the first thing I thought of.

My 95 explorer is fully etched from bumper to bumper.

My uncle got his 25th anniversary T/A etched in '94 as well.
