I know i am gonna get flammed for this here but i am gonna ask anyway as i am curious. I bought a small hot wheels type car the other day and it was a 71 chevelle and it was primer black in color and had what looked like 20"'s on it. It just had a real sinister look. I was wondering if anyone knows what it would take or what the biggest 20" or at least 18" whell i coud stuff under it with no tub work. I have found a car i can get cheap and would primer black it and throw a motor in it and just cruise it.
Just some random thoughts i have been having.

I live in Denver, and have seen Carmelo Anthony's 71 Chevelle with 24(?) inch wheels -- butt-ugly IMHO.

Around here in Portland OR there is a 72 olds with 22's I think and they had to put a lift kit on it to make them clear, very ugly as it looks like a 4 wheel drive.20's fit front and rear no problem if you get the right spacing and tires

I tried sizing up my 285-50/20's under the rear of my'69. Was looking into a set of aftermarket IROC style wheels in 18/20 combo. I do think 18's might look better, but I already have 2 pr of the 285-50/20's here, I do agree that it makes the car look like a Hot WHeels car.

Um, I THINK it's becoming a trend, but I don't know why. I've seen this new mag @ several magazine outlets:

I think it started out as a screening process for the military and someone took pride in failing miserably.

I love this page in particular. Step-by-step how to screw up your car.

I agree, anything over 20" looks terrible and even 20" might be pushing it alot. I may lean more to the 18" or so and see how it looks. In NO WAY will it get alift just to fit wheels and tire under it, i saved that for my 4wd truck.

Go as big as you want. Lift or lower as much as you want. It's your car, you are the only one that HAS to like it. I don't think bigger wheels look good unless the vehicle is lowered. The bigger the wheel, the lower the car needs to be. Stock is cool, if that is what you like. I tend to like things that look a little different than everyone else.

If you scale the hot wheels car they are probabally around 26" - 28" from what I have seen. I don't know exactly what car you are talking about though.

I think 20s would look ok in the back if the car was really tucking them. 20s up front are a bit much. Something like an 18/20 combo would be good. I'd have to see it before I made a final decision but thats my .02

20s at stock height would look like crap IMO

Found some examples. I stand by my thoughts. Needs to be tucking with a pro street stance with taller tires out back and 18s up front. I think it would look sick

Only closed-minded people will flame you so I wouldn't worry too much about it,Andy. 20x10's with 5.5"-6" backspace will easily fit a 68-72. For tires, you could run either a 275/35/20 or 295/40/20's. A 19x8 or 18x9 front wheel w/255 or 275 tire would be a nice contrast.

Driving on rubber bands -- I hope the roads where these cars are driven are better than ones out here in Colorado. Try that here, and you'd be driving on big eggs after a week!

Ever seen the sidewall on a 295/40/20? Nuff said.

Hey Clint, do you know what the backspacing should be on a 65 Chevelle with stock width rear end for the 20" in the rear and 18" in the front?

Thats some of the info i was looking for. I am not dead set on 20's or any size just yet but just think it is a cool look in black primer. Just be a summer cruiser and then move on to something else. The car was a Foose car, sorry not hot wheels.

Thanks Clint for the info.

My 285-50/20's are 31" tall (5.5" side wall). Section width is about 11.5" with just over 10" tread width. Very meaty tire if it would fit.

i say 18 front 20 back is just right if you plan on big wheels and thing else is kinda out the door. i plan on runging 18's if i can find some that have black center and chrome or polished lips course they have to be offset. any takers on websites to look guys?

Just my opinion but stick with the same size wheels all the way around, they tend to look goofy with smaller wheels up front.Especially when the larger one's will fit.My friend HAD to have 20's on his 72 no-go but he also has tv's and an xbox in it and ghost flamed candy blue paint. Looks OK if you like that kind of stuff but I dont think there is a handling benefit of 20's over 18's.I say just do what you want and call it good,if people dont like it just ask them what they drive.

Yup -- these (in the pictures above) aren't even close! I run a 285/55/R20 (6.17 inch sidewall and 32.34 inches tall) on my F150 in the summer. Almost the same sidewall height as my 245/60/R15's I run on my 70 El Camino, but over 5 3/4 inches taller. My wife's car has 225/45/R17's on the front and 275/40/R17's on the rear. One good pot hole, and it's new tire and wheel at a minimum.

yeah, the wheels on those cars just look bad to me....

I'm only 22 so its not really an age thing, it just doesn't look good to me at all

I've been running 17",18",and 20" wheels with low profile tires for 15 years and haven't damaged anything yet. Our roads around here sure aren't glass-smooth,either. Like anything else, you just have to pay attention where you're going.
Admit it,dscabra, you just like tall sidewall tires. :D :D :D

You do know a 20x10 won't fit a 64-65,right? A pair of 20x9.5's with 5 7/8" backspace and 275/35/20 tires would work in the rear and some 18x8's with 4.75" backspace and 245/35/18 tires in the front.

I know what you mean. My 335/35/17's are only 26" tall. Sure wish they were about 28". I've been looking at some Hoosier 31x18x17's but my wheel tubs are only 32". They are 22" wide, however,so I've been contemplating the idea of selling my 17x9 & 17x13 pindrive Kidney Beans and switching to some 2006 18x9.5 & 19x12 Z06 wheels with 285/30/18 & 355/25/19 rubber.

Out here, the roads open up after every heavy rain or snow. I know where the usual holes are, and navigate through them with no problems, but there is always a new one that sneaks up on me. And yes, I prefer a taller sidewall!

I like the 19/20 combo Clint suggested. Not really for performance, but would definitely stand out from the crowd- which is the point. Oh yeah, but make sure to keep it LOW

So are you running a 19" front? I can't find much information online about them. Lots of 20" rear info.
