: Shopping for '70 SS454.....

I'm thinking of adding a Chevelle to my collection to keep my '69 Camaro company. A friend of mine (36 years ago had a '70 454 LS5(or6). It was a 454/450hp. It was all stock he was the second owner in'72. I remember that it had fiberglass front inner fenders. Was this special to the 454/450?
I find very few with this option at the car shows. Was this a rare option?

Are the fiberglass liners a clue to the real 454/450's?

Inquiring mind,

they are not fiberglas. They are plastic. Not unique to the LS-6 either.

You won't see many today with the plastic inner fenders because they are very prone to cracking and most folks replace them with steel inner fenders when they restore these cars.

The plastic inners were not an option. A few of the assembly plants used them for a while.

My 70 ss396 350hp originally came with the plastic inners. They were cracked and broken in too many places so they are up in the attic and replaced with metal.

are you looking for an LS6? if so, be careful and get an expert to verify docs if the car has them. if it doesn't have them, i'd assume it's a clone and pay accordingly. nice thing about '70 SS's is that there are getting to be more of them all the time :)

Same thing can be said about them in a negative way.

Verify everything if you want original and correct, it will save you bigtime. Otherwise find one that they're calling a clone, or custom. There's plenty of fakes out there, and many are very nicely done.
