OK, the carb/poor mpg problem, i think, might be solved.

Next, what is happening is that sometimes the left side headlight will just go out.

If i touch the connection at the plug, the light comes back on.

OR, if i sort of push the plug towards the light (as if to push the plug further into the prongs ), the light will come back on.

Incidentally, this also happened with the 85 SS i had. So, apparently this is a 78-88 G body(malibu, monte carlo, grand prix, lemans, bonneville [the small one], cutlass, 442, regal, GNX, elcamino, sprint, cabellero) maladie.

Pull the plug off
There should be 2 or 3 prongs sticking out of the headlight.
With a little finesse, bend the prongs just a little but not so much that the plug will not go back on.
Fill the plug with dialectic grease and reconnect.

The goal is to make the prongs on the headlight either push outward or inward on the plug, thus creating the constant connection. The grease will also help

1) Should i bend the prongs outwards or inwards?

2) I'm guessing i can get dielectric grease at any auto parts store?

1. Doesn't matter, you can also take a pick set and CLOSE up the female ends on the connector.
2. Yes

I would take the connectors out of the plastic body to clean and inspect them. For info on how to remove them see here http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154547
I would also try bending the inside spring lip upwards so it make a good connection on the headlight terminals. You can also get replacement terminals (packard 59 series) here
