Replacing gas tank and sending unit. Through reading various posts, it's recommended to "ohm out" a new sending unit before installing to prevent having to pull down gas tank due to a bad unit. I bought a digital multimeter and it really doesn't explain any proceedures. Has a black lead and a red one, I set it on the ohm function and tried it on the old sending unit just to try. I know I'm supposed to get 0-90 ohms on a 70 while slowly moving the float. Can someone walk me through this? Sending unit is completely out of car and disconnected.

There are actually 2 ways since you have the tank out of the car. If you have a partner that can help you, ground the sending unit and hook up the (I think it’s a brown or tan wire) to the top of the unit (the same wire you removed when you uninstalled it).
Turn the key on and have your partner move the float up and down slowly and see if the gauge responds accordingly.
If you want to use your new meter (and I know you do  )…
Empty with the float all the way down should say 0
As you slowly move it up it should go to about 90
Black lead on the round metal plate and red lead where the tan wire goes – good luck
Edit – and just because your not sure of something does not make you an idiot, don’t be so hard on yourself…. :beers:
Thanks a ton 70 nialator. I get 000.3 and 088.1 am I good to go? Looks like almost 90 ohms. Thanks, but I AM an idiot when it comes to electrical. Thank goodness for this site and guys like you willing to help!
Thanks again, Darren. I think I just graduated from idiot to just dummy!
