Did someone make an SS?

They kinda did a sloppy job of switching the VIN tags
Does anything match anything?

uh lets see..Yes someone tried to make an SS,nothing matches anything and i think that crack is the heater vent?Though it looks like steel i believe its plastic.i have other pics so i,ll have a closer look..

Kinda looks like your new vin tag is just glued in place? On the back looks like the rosette rivets were ground down and never replaced with new rivets and the just glued the new vin in place?

Did you just recently buy the car? Sure looks like lawsuit material to me. This isn't just a case of someone 'cloning' an SS, it's outright fraud. I'm sure it's just as illegal to swap VIN's in Canada as it is in the USA.

In the 2nd pic. Where is that vin stamped?

Looks to me like it's at the firewall opening where the heater blower motor goes thru. That VIN matches the build sheet, which definitely does NOT match the dash VIN tag :o

^^^ you got it right..yes i recently bought the car.dealership has closed(dont know if i had a hand in that)and i CANT get a hold of any of the owners. They may or may not know about this. What i do know is the person whose name is on the title doesnt want to inform the person she bought it from(her brother-inlaw b/c she doesnt want him to know she made a profit from re-selling--WTF?)and she doesnt want to tell the dealer who she sold it to that i,d like to talk to him.She admitted they sometimes talk/she has his ph.# and that its not up to her to tell him.WTF again. This is real sketchy.me thinks she is protecting whomever did the deed(brother-inlaw) and doesnt want the dealer to know she sold them a tagged car.Or they knew about it all along(from her tipping them off)b/c i told her i had found build sheet and would be looking for convins..WHAT A F,ING EXPENSIVE SOAP OPERA...

Did you try and tell her if she corporated with you you will inform the police that she did so and they will go easy on her only because you want to get to the bottom of WTF is the deal with the vin change..

that sucks!!! But that is exactly why I bought a malibu and not an ss!! must have looked at 15-20 ss (clones) claiming to be the real deal with monte dashes , swept dashes, non matching build sheets etc.. so i found a mint 71 malibu body that came from AZ and built a small block monster for it and never been happier!!! Sorry about your misfortune!!

If I were you I would not hesitate to go and talk to the local law enforcement, whether it's the RCMP or provincial police. As far as I know it is illegal to swap V.I.N.s anywhere and I'm sure someone would want to look into whether the car was hot or not. This should put a little heat on whatever slimeball POS sold you the vehicle.

Sounds like something a little more sinister going on and someone is trying to avoid either A. turning someone in or B. Going to jail themselves for stealing a car and trying to cover it up.

Problem now is. You could end up loosing this car and the money you put into it.

If you contact the RCMP and nothing is stolen they may issue a new VIN. A friend that has a car lot had this done when he bought a stolen Yukon at a government auction. The truck was declared stolen at the auction with release paper work from the insurance company. The vin tag was missing and the RCMP put a brass tag on the door post with a government issued number.
You could also try to determine the complete original VIN number and apply for a lost title but then you would have a Malibu but at least it would be legal.

The vin on the car now is a big block U code, you should try to do a title search on the vin from the build sheet. Good Luck, Joe.

if it was me ....... I'd run it down before spending one more dime !!! you may very well end up having to turn it over to the police when you find out that it is HOT .... I wish you all the luck in the world .. your going to need it .....

I had a similar problem with a 67 Corvette. Dumb me never even checked the VIN tag when I bought it to make sure it matched the title. Drove it 1200 miles and then noticed the VIN tag was different (said it was a 1966, different VIN, different color even). Long story short, called the FBI, they came to inspect it, and they looked at the hidden VIN (stamped backwards on top of the frame, between the frame and body)... and that VIN matched my title. The car had been stolen, recovered, and resold by the insurance company. The VIN on the dash had come from a wrecked 66 and the title from the 66 had been used to sell the car several times. I sold it to a dealer shortly after I bought it. I'm betting that car is still running around with the wrong VIN tag on the dash.

See if you can find the hidden VIN. From what I've read on the net, I'm guessing it would be on top of the frame rail under the drivers seat. Best way to view it is to stick a mirror between the body and frame, and shine a flashlight on the mirror.

Hopefully the original car wasn't totalled... and someone just dug up a good VIN tag and title to attach to it.

If you get the police involved you may very well lose the car for good or at least until its worked out. Heres a similar thread over at Team Camaro.
