The drivers side of my 67 bench seat leans about 3 inches futher back than the passenger side. The result is a reclining driving position that is uncomfortable. I removed the mounting bolt from the floor and put a 1 inch spacer under the rear seat leg as a temporay fix. Anyone know how I can get the drivers seat back to sit as upright as the passenger side?

Check the rubber bumper when you fold the seat back forward. At the bottom of the seat back there should be a rubber bumper on the bottom half of the seat. If this is missing it will go further back. If not that maybe bent.

Many times if there is a significant 'lean' to the seat then your seat top frame is busted somehow...you probably won't be able to see this unless you remove the seat cover...some people weld such seats because that is all they have or all they can do...I say get a new seat but save the old one in case you need to rob springs or other parts from it...an improper seat is a dangerous thing BTW...more dangerous then you would think...especially in a hot rod Chevelle...

the one in my 66 Tempest from way back did the same thing...... I was 17 and broke myself...... i think it was from many years of leaning back against it that did it...... what I did was took the rubber spacer talked about above, got an aluminum spacer and longer screw and put it back together with the rubber bumper on top and made a taller "bumper" ....... but see above, I was young and broke........ I wouldn't do it now or suggest to do it that way because the metal, if not broke, is at least fatigued and waiting to break.

If you're comin' down to San Jose, I have a bench seat sitting in my office. Has lt blue vinyl in good condition. Put buckets in mine year and a half ago and still got the old seat.

I agree that the possibility of stressed metal is a big safety hazard. You want that seat to hold you up in case of a collision. Pick up that bench from Malibu Jimbu!!!

Thanks to all for the advice. I checked the seat back and found the rubber bumper to be intact so suspect a badly bent or broken seat back. Will contact Malibu Jimbu to see about picking up his old seat......
P.S. Just replaced my Powerglide with a 2004R 4 speed automatic. Made an unbelieveable change in the personality of the car. The original 283 is now always in its power band and is way quicker than I imagined. The Edlebrock, Holley, Hedman, Pertronix, MSD, K&N, and Flowmaster improvements all now seem to work better than ever !!! It's my daily driver (28 mostly freeway miles each way) and as long as I keep my foot out of it I knock down about 20 mpg.....

What did you do with the Powerglide?...that oughta be worth some bucks to a drag racer maybe...those boys like to horde those old powerglides...
