: John wilson help w/ Mini tub
Been reading about mini tubs and respected your various suspension posts.
Last one I read was you were running 29 x 10.5 tires w/ a 6.5" back spacing . what rim width can you run??
Regarding your mini tub, did you do the work?? Can I do it without removing the frame from the car? In retrospect is it worth the effort to gain the 1.75" ? Do you have any pics showing the added bracing you have or could you explain further??
Any info on your mini tub set up would be very helpful.
Thanks for your response in advance.

I've actually run 3 sets of tires since having the car mini'd:
Hoosier 29x10.5W 11" tread/29.3 tall/13.25"section bias slick
M/T ET radial 315/60....the largest of the 3 tires in height and section
Hoosier 30x10.5 radial... 10.5" tread/29.5tall/12.5section.
All of these tires on run on 15x10 Draglites with 6.5"BS.
My chassis shop (JBZ Racing) has done all the work on my roll bar/cage and the mini-tub.
Yes, it can be done without removing the body from the frame.
Was it worth it? Yes. Before doing the mini-tub I could only comfortably fit a 28x10 slick on a 8" rim. This allow's me to run the wider slick on a wider rim, improving contact patch. The 67's just don't have the wheelwell room that the 68-72 Chevelles do.
If you PM me your email address I can send some pics that show what's involved.
Thanks alot John. You have mail.
Last night I took a closer look @ my car , it is in hibernation until Jan. which forces me to do some other things around the place!! Anyway, I'm running 29.5 x 10.5's on 8" rims w/ a 4.5 back spacing. these have a section width of 13.2 w/ a 10.2 tread.
Looked at the tire and wheel forum and saw several people running 10" rims w/ 5.5 back spacing. I'm thinking that my tires aren't able to perform properly on an 8" rim.
John and others, do you think I will be able to run a 15 x 10 w/ 5.5 back spacing and the 29.5 x 10.5 without a mini tub???? I have already trimmed the fender lips as much as possible.
Or would I be better to step back to a 9" tire on my 8" rims???
JOHN WILSON Dec 8th, 06, 12:50 PM Are you sure you have 13.2" section on an 8" rim? You'll find the section width will grow about an inch with a 2" wider rim. I would just take measurements the clearance you currently have and go from there. If you don't want to go the mini-tub route (certainly understandable) I would consider stepping back to a 9" tire on the 8" wheel. The most section I could run was ~11.75" without rubbing. I'm also running an Eibach lowering spring in the back that drops the wheelwell lip about mid-section over the tire which compounds clearance problems.
I didn't measure the section width. will do tonight. So the section width will grow with a wider rim, that won't work because the current tires just fit w/ very little clearance. luckily my car separates on launch or they would rub.
I need to do some more thinking.
kjett Dec 8th, 06, 7:00 PM Tom,
FWIW, I'm going to try a 15"x9" wheel with 5.5" of BS this time around. I figure worst case scenario I can run a small spacer to decrease the back spacing. Baer makes some quality billet spacers that I wouldn't be afraid to use. Once I get the wheels/tires mounted I'll let you know how they fit. BTW, I'm not planning on trimming the fender lip on my new quarters, and I will also be running the stock wheel well molding :)
too much Dec 8th, 06, 7:14 PM John, I'm considering mini tubbing mine as well. Could you email the pics to me also? I want to run Mickey Thompsons 315/60, did you like the fit and performance of them when you ran them? I'll PM you my email address.
Thanks, Kris.
JOHN WILSON Dec 8th, 06, 7:58 PM Tom, no messages or emails have come thru. PM me your EM when you're ready.
John, Check your PM. Hope it worked this time.
Kjett, Thanks, I might try the 9" also. when do you think you'll set the body on your car??

JOHN WILSON Dec 8th, 06, 9:27 PM Tom, got it. Pics are sent.
too much Dec 9th, 06, 12:02 AM Thanks for the pics John. Did you like the Mickey's when you ran them?

For a DOT tire, yeah I think they're as good as it gets. They were on the car when it ran it's best et with my old sbc. Never saw any difference in et between the MT radial or Hoosier bias slick.
