View Full Version : Wiper problem
Ryan's malibu Dec 7th, 06, 6:20 AM i set up an appointment for saturday for my inspection and wheel alignment. This is my first car and i need it to get to work and school. It is a 64 malibu 4dr. I just installed an in-line sprayer as the one on the wiper motor doesnt work. I was just running the wiper motor for a few minutes after i got it hooked up. Maybe 2 minutes or 3 topps. Now it wont work. The motor is new. Fuse is fine. Before i stopped it would only go on sometimes. Could this be a switch problem. If so, can i pick these up eaisly. Any help would be great because if i need parts i need to order them ASAP. Thanks again.

Ryan's malibu Dec 7th, 06, 8:24 PM i picked up a toggle switch today at napa. Hooked it up and nothing. I hooked my regular switch back up and, the wipers turned on for a second but the blades went down instead of up??? I dont know why, they stopped when they could go no further. I took the blades off, turned the motor on and the motor went back into part and would not turn on again. I know it is getting power as my sprayers work. The fuse is fine and switch works because it works sometimes. Anyone have any idea's? Thanks
70 nialator Dec 7th, 06, 8:49 PM The sprayers work from a different connection altogether but in the same switch if yours has the ‘push in” kind.
Have you checked the connections themselves, connected directly to the motor on the fire wall? If you have a constant 12 volts there then your wiper motor is going bad.
There is really not much to the entire system……
Ryan's malibu Dec 7th, 06, 9:49 PM i have the push in kind of switch. The motor is brand new with about 3 minutes time of being on. So i cant see that being bad. So it must be the connections??
70 nialator Dec 8th, 06, 8:22 AM Motors have been/gone bad right from the box, but before you consider taking it back you need to establish some facts. This diagram is for a 68, If this diagram is the same for 64 the B+ or positive is on as long as the key is on. The different speeds are dictated by which ground is applied from the switch.
Turn the key on and make sure you have a good, constant B+ source at the motor.
If you do – take the ground lead from your test light and hook it to that positive connection. You can verify this connection by applying the probe end to something metal under the hood, the light should come on.
After you have established good power and the ground of your probe is connected to that power, probe the grounds at the same connector, looks like brown and blue REMEMBER that the ground will only be there IF the switch is positioned correctly.
Good luck

Ryan's malibu Dec 8th, 06, 4:19 PM ok, well it works now, i didnt touch anything. it is very cold out, maybe that has to do with it? Also, should the wipers turn on when the car is not running? Mine turn on only when it is running.
The only problem is, they go backward. If i was to put the blades on parrel to the ground, they would not go up the windshield but down into the hood. How is this??
anychevy Dec 8th, 06, 6:50 PM they only operate when ignition is on and it sounds like they are not parking properly, or the arms are not located on the splines right. When you turn the wipers off while the ignition is on they should park or stop parallel to the windsheild, remove the arms from the splines and check what's happening, relocate the arms if nessasary. the wiper motor has a +12v ignition supply to it like the diagram above, the speeds, on-off and park are controlled from the switch via ground or 12v-

davis95 Dec 8th, 06, 7:01 PM It may just be a dirty/bad connection somewhere. Check all the connections first. My first car was also a 64 four door. Good luck.
