I'm looking at a 69 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed. What should I be looking for to make sure it's correct? Vin # Data plate? etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred

There are several things to look for. Have you done on a Search on here, because it has been discussed many times.

The VIN and Trim Tag will not give any proof of a 69 SS Chevelle.

The basics are: look to see if it has the original engine with the partial VIN stamped on the front pad. Look for a 12 bolt rear. Does it have front disc brakes? Ask the owner what proof he has to verify it as an original SS car.

These few suggestions will not guarantee it to be an SS car, but that is the basic starting point.

Fred, where in RI are you located? If you need someone to help you look, I can give you a hand if you like. I have a 69 396 4 spd car also

According to those that have replied to my survey, KC and Atlanta stamped the partial VIN by the oil filter. Baltimore and Framingham were still stamped on the engine pad.

i guess one could say (if the cowl tag is original)that it could be a super sport if the colors are one of the following, monaco orange, datona yellow,or ralley green
i believe these were ss only colors

I think the Ralley Green was only available as a factory color option on Camaros and not Chevelles. It could probably be ordered as 'Special Paint' but it would have been available on any Chevelle model negating the SS 'proof'. ;)
