: Smoothing a clear coat?

I bought a 72 Chevelle a few weeks ago. The car was painted about a year ago with a couple of layers of paint then a clear coat. The car shines but the clear coat is a little rough, like it was sprayed then nothing else was done. I guess it would be somewhat comparable to what drywall would look like after being rolled (small pits everywhere). Is that normal after the clear coat or what? What do I do to get the clear coat smooth? A complete breakdown from start to finish would be extremely helpful. Thanks, Mike

Mike, it sounds like they didn't sand and buff the clear coat. You could wet sand with 1200, 1500, 2000 then buff using and extra cut then stardard cut finishing with a swirl remover.
The problem is you have no way of knowing how many coats of clear where applied so you would have to be very careful you don't cut through to the basecoat.I would recommend you try it on an area that will not be seen if possible just to see how thick the clear coat is. I hope this helps, Alan
