1)what paint should i use to make the top of the car a glossy black where the vinyl top used to be. one that looks original.

2)im going to paint under my hood black also. is there any type of special head treated paint that i should use. or could the same paint that i use on the top of the car (after i get some suggestions for it) work

thanks

Go to a auto body paint supply store. They can show you different types of black paint and give you tips on how to spray it and what type of safety equipment you will need to protect yourself, ie. resperator etc.

You do not need any special paint for under hood painting. Only the engine needs Hi Temp engine enamel, so that it does not burn off.

So tecnically what ever you decide to spray on top you could also spray in your engine compartment.

Paint is expensive so make sure you properly prep the areas before painting. Otherwise you will have just waisted a lot of $. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

You would need to supply the necessary info for your car... Make /model & year, then we can come up with the factory color name and paint code.
You could also post the paint code question under the "Tag Team" forum.

I would use a single stage urethane. Although black 'colors' do vary, it's only very slightly and you'd only notice when put right next to each other in bright sunlight with 20/20 vision. The most important aspect is the preparation and getting it straight. The factory didn't spend as much effort on vinyl top cars when it came to the bodywork on the roof to 1/4 panel seam. Use a good urethane primer, after either treating any bare meatl spots with an acid etcher or a self-etching primer. Go with one product such as Dupont, PPG, Martin Seneor or whatever. Make friends with the guy behind the counter at your local body supply store! He'll give you advice along the way hopefully.

ive heard that vinyl top cars are cars that became that way because they had slight dents or dings in the roof of the car.

is that true?

Not true, Vinyl tops were an option. Just like power steering was an option order it if you want it or pass.
The correct black for 70 Chevelle or Elcamino should be Tuxedo Black. But like Jimmy P. said Black is pretty much black unless you get a metalic black.
