Hello all
Some of you that were at CB03 may have heard that the drivers door on the 71 conv got stuck shut twice. The first time we put a new door latch in it and it was working fine. Next day the door got stuck again. New strikers were also installed. The doors were working fine until we got it back again from the paint guy. It seems as though the latch isn't unlocking all the way. We have the door panel, lock assembly and handle removed from the door.
Any thoughts on how to get the door unstuck? graemlins/angry.gif

JJ, Try this: Instant Door Opener (http://www.amkus.com/html/spreaders.html) It works every time! :D
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I have never had this problem, but you can sometimes manually unlatch the door if you expose the latch mechinism. You would have to take the inner panel off, and then work blind down in the latch area. If you had a parts door that you could remove the skin from to look at it might help you see what you need to work the latch.
Good Luck.

My right side door does the same thing, hopefully the new door latch I bought from Nick Lewis will fix it. Here is what I do to get it open when it sticks. Get hold of the door lock knob and even though it doesnt pop all the way up keep pulling and pushing up and down very quickly. Sometimes it only takes a few times but other times I have to quit and come back to it, but it always opens eventually.
Good luck.

did you put new outside door handles on it after paint? I had the same problem the rod on the push button was a little too long and was pushing on latch and would not un lock
jeff
the door handle is already taken off of the car.

JJ, I seem to remember my old Chevelle had an issue with the door lock, had to whip the lock button up & down real fast a few times then it would "clunk" deep inside the door, and I could open it. Kinda a "by feel" thing-does the door feel like it's locked and the internals not catching when you pull the lever / push the bar in? Try manhandling the lock/unlock button. Assume you've already tried using the key to lock/unlock already too, sometimes that helps also.

I found on mine that the inside handle assembly needed to be lubed. The door handle would stay in the up position enough that the door would not unlock. I took off the door panels and greased the area around the shaft that the inside door handle attaches to and took care of the problem I had of the door sticking in the locked position. If I remember correctly there were a couple of plates that all attach together and I guess after about 30 years the original lube had dried up.
