I'm replacing the fuel tank in my 70 Chevelle SS. Were gas tanks left with their 'natural' galvanized finish when delivered from the factory? What about the tank straps?

The fuel tank was left with the galvanized finish, and the straps are a natural finish also. I've also seen the straps done in semigloss black. If the straps are left natural, clear coating may be advisable to prevent corrosion or rust.
