: How to make homemade Chevy Orange?
Glenn1018 Oct 24th, 03, 3:58 PM I got a qt of Safety Orange enamel from the hardware store - it was the only brush on orange they had. It's way too orange, for lack of a better word.
I tried to darken it by adding a touch of black, but that doesn't look right - too muddy.
Should I try adding a little red?
Thanks.
ETD66SS Oct 24th, 03, 5:04 PM Is this for an engine block?
70isfine Oct 24th, 03, 5:13 PM Its been a while since i mixed Hugger Orange, but i beleive the original formula contained red, yellow and maybe some green.I would go with adding the red.
Glenn1018 Oct 24th, 03, 5:31 PM Thanks, and yes it's for the engine.
I just noticed that the safety orange is a solvent based enamel - now I'm afraid to use it.
Out of 4 hardware stores, that's the only brush on orange I could find.
70isfine Oct 24th, 03, 5:34 PM Buy a can of yellow and a can of red. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

POR15 is the best to use if you want to brush it on.
If you want to spray it on, my bodyman swears by PPG DBC on engine blocks...
Glenn1018 Oct 24th, 03, 7:07 PM I tried mixing yellow and red before I bought the safety orange. I like a brand of paint called Fix-All, but they don't have orange, so I thought I'd mix some - came out looking like a band-aid or dark reddish pink.
I'd thought about POR, but was wanting to get started today or tomorrow.
I may try Home Depot - Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Ace, and Pleasants' weren't much help.
MARTINSR Oct 24th, 03, 8:36 PM My goodness, Chevy orange engine enamel has GOT to be available at every parts store in the nation!!
Martin Senour number 7887 was available at NAPA stores just a short while ago. I am sure if they don't have that they have it in the Duplicolor line.
Glenn1018 Oct 24th, 03, 10:36 PM Thanks MARTINSR. I thought parts stores only carried the engine enamels in spray cans. I'll call NAPA tomorrow.
MARTINSR Oct 25th, 03, 12:23 AM I'm not nearly as bright as you give me credit for graemlins/clonk.gif I thought you were talking about aerosols.
I don't remember a forumla for Chevy engine orange, sorry.
Glenn1018 Oct 26th, 03, 7:47 AM MARTINSR, no big deal.
I went to Home Depot - no brush on orange enamel.
It looks like there are two options for Chevy Orange in brush on form, POR and Eastwood's Sign Painter's 1-Stop.
ELLI Oct 26th, 03, 9:23 AM I guess I am missing something, why are you trying to find something to brush on? I just went to the local chain parts store and picked up the Duplicolor in a spray can and it has looked great for over 3 years now.
jgoggan Oct 27th, 03, 10:06 AM Off-topic note to ELLI: Your second link in your sig points to the same page as the first -- instead of to your "elliboom2" page of stuff for sale. Just FYI. smile.gif

Texas70 Oct 27th, 03, 12:41 PM The high heat engine spray paint at your local parts store will do a fine job and you can do it tonight. If you want a big step up, then order the POR-15 and wait a few days for it to arrive.
 painting the engine is the easy part. Grab the can and be done with it. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

SS_Dave Oct 29th, 03, 2:41 PM I got some high temp/gloss Chev orange in a rattle can from Murrays Auto parts. It is good to 600 deg and has a really nice gloss that looks even better when wiped down with wd-40 when cleaning the motor. It comes in other colors too.
Black, clear and an aluminum that is the closest thing I have found to motorcycle aluminum paint.
I resprayed most of my Goldwing engine with it, and you can't tell where the original paint was.
Umass Oct 29th, 03, 8:31 PM could you take the chevy orange spray can cut it open and and drain the paint into something then just brush it on
