painless doesnt make a specific wiring harness for my 68 chevelle, I heard that a 67 nova direct fit harness will work....will this be better than the universal muscle car harness?

American Autowire makes the best. Here's a link to their site:

You are better off with a specific harness for you chevelle. They are basically "plug and play" which means no cutting/splicing required. M&H and americanautowire will even customize your harness for popular mods. Taken from the americanautowire site...

Did you know?
Did you know that we can custom upgrade your Factory Fit harness application to include such things as GM HEI ignition, MSD ignition, or internally regulated or 1 wire alternator? We can even switch the alternator from one side of the car to another in most cases. We actually stock hundreds of upgraded harnesses for the more popular applications. Want to ask our tech department a question about your application?

I agree, Painless is anything but painless, factory wiring is the way to go unless the car is extremly modified with a lot of extra circuits, or it is a race car that does not need circuits. We have great pricing on American Autowire at GPSuperstore.com. Come on over and request a price and save some money

Chevelleman,

You can check here also........http://www.lectriclimited.com/wiring-chevelle.htm

I was going to replace my 64 wiring harness from here, but I found a degraded alternator was my problem.......but they dont look all that bad.

When it comes to wiring harnesses there are two main paths you can take:

1. You can buy an inexpensive generic hot rod harness from any one of several vendors. This will require a lot of installation work because while some parts of the electric system are pretty generic (like headlights and taillights) others are anything but (like heaters and wipers). You will have to add connector blocks and terminals for all the unique OEM electrical devices. You will have to add extra wires for some of the creative or more sophisticated OEM systems.

2. You can buy OEM reproduction harnesses that plug right in and work. You WILL pay a LOT more for these kinds of products. On the order of almost 10X more. Two main vendors here: Factory Fit (a division of American Autowire) and M&H. Both seem to have good reputations.

In between these two extremes are the option of rebuilding you existing harness using new fuse block and/or terminals. I have done this successfully myself. This also allows for some of your own customization if desired.

American Autowire does make some hot rod systems specific to certain cars like 67 and 68 Camaros and the ubiquitous 55 Chevy. I do not believe they have any specific to Chevelle but I have wondered just how close that 68 Camaro harness might be.
