With heads, headers, transmission, water pump, removed from a big block, will attaching the engine lift chain to the block using the deck boltholes where the head bolts fastened, support the engine safely?

I searched the database and this was recommended but it seems to me that this is placing a great deal of stress on two bolts with 3/4 inch of threads.

Hi Lou.
It is not a problem.
If you think about it differently, many folks pull motors using the intake bolts (with heads on) or even the 4 carb stud holes.

Thanks for the reassurance Levon. Do you have any idea what the weight of the 396 short-block is?

If a fully dressed BBlock weighs in at 650, then without the intake, carb, dist, heads., exhaust manifold..... I would wager at 400 lbs. Err on the side of 500 but it really depeds on what else is still bolted on (starter, power steering.....)

Make sense?
